Astronomy

Astronomy teacher Mr. Casey Milligan helped students view as Mercury transited the sun on Monday. FCPS News ran a feature story of our event.

1. Report Card Distribution

Report cards were distributed through 7th period classes today.  Students who do not have a 7th period class may pick up their report cards in Student Services.


2. Attendance for Thanksgiving Week

If you know your child will be missing full days of school the week of November 25th, please call the attendance line to let us know now.

WTW Alum YA Authors

Published YA authors and Woodson HS 2003 alums Danielle Stinson (“The Birds, the Bees, and You and Me”) and Olivia Hinebaugh (“Before I Disappear”) talk to students about the writing process and their books in a collaboration between the library, science and English departments.


3. Weekly Progress Reports

FCPS Weekly Progress Reports will not be sent to parents Sunday, November 24th through Sunday, December 1st during the Thanksgiving break.


4. Parents as Partners Session 3

We hope you can join us on Wednesday, December 4th for our next Parents as Partners Series #3 on Alcohol, Vaping and other Drugs.

Environmental Club Tree Planting

5. Environmental Club Tree Planting

Woodson’s environmental club partnered with Fairfax ReLeaf and other Woodson organizations including SNHS, NHS, Key Club and leadership to plant 15 native trees around campus.  In addition, they tended the native trees planted by the Orchestra door and cleaned up one of the library courtyards.  We had 40 student volunteers and three adults including Lauren Kinne (the science department chair), Aaron Morgan (the band director) and Taylor from Fairfax ReLeaf.


6. W.T. Woodson Band Holiday Tunes for Tots Concerts

It's that holiday time of year! Please join the W.T. Woodson Band for the annual Holiday Tunes performances. The Holiday Tunes for Tots concerts include a holiday music performance, joined by seasonal and all-around favorite characters.

Show times are Wednesday, December 4th at 10:00 a.m. and Thursday, December 5th at 10:00 a.m. and will be held in the Main Gymnasium. Admission is $5.00. Questions? Contact Anne Reed at 703-273-4357 or holidaytunesfortots@gmail.com.

7. Holidays for Heroes

The WTW Military Family Network invites you to support The National Capital Region Red Cross “Holidays for Heroes” Program. Between November 15-December 13, please drop off

  • Small toiletries 
  • Gift cards to Subway and Dunkin’ Donuts (families use these when visiting patients at Walter Reed)
  • Other low-value gift cards (such as iTunes, Google, Amazon) 
  • Individually wrapped snacks 
  • New clothing items (Men and women - sizes Small thru Large)
  • Mittens/gloves
  • Socks
  • Gently worn coats

All donations will be used to support local military and veterans year-round! Bring your donations to the WTW Main Office.  If you’d like to help coordinate this effort, please contact Lisa Griffin at 703-407-5090 or Lisagriffin1970@gmail.com. 


Woodson Area Chorus

8. Woodson Area Chorus

Meredith Lee (Frost Choral Director) and Amy Moir are running a Woodson Area Chorus. This is their 4th year of the program. Students in 5th and 6th grade are eligible to participate. There have 3 rehearsals and then the choir performs at the Frost Chorus Concert on Tuesday, December 3rd.

This year, there are 129 students participating. Above is a picture of the first rehearsal.  Some high school choral students volunteer their time to help as leaders.


9. Choral Students Selected for Honor Choirs

The following Woodson singers were selected to the American Choral Director’s Association Southern Region Junior High/Middle School Honor Choir:
Emma Falardeau, Julia Heltzel, Nick Siew, Reagan Wales

Also, these Woodson singers were selected to the American Choral Director’s Association Southern Region High School Mixed Chorus:
Carline Barata, AJ Foley, August Vesilind

These singers were selected by audition and will travel to Mobile, AL March 11 - 14, 2020 to participate in honor choirs with singers from across 13 states.  Congratulations!


WTW Staff Vets Breakfast

Ms. Kraft and Mr. Rosebrock enjoy a cup of coffee at the Woodson staff Veteran's Day breakfast on Monday, November 11th. 


10. Safety & Security Month

In honor of November being Safety & Security month, each week we will share pieces of information with you. 

Secure the Building-

Used if the danger is outside the building, e.g., a robbery near the school.

  • No students allowed outside of buildings and trailers (no P.E., recess, etc.).
  • All building and trailer exterior doors are closed and locked.
  • People in locked trailers remain in locked trailers.
  • Staff members and students are free to move about inside buildings and trailers.
  • Staff member posted at building main entrance to control visitor access, issue passes, and direct to reunification area, if necessary..
