Starting next Monday and going until Thanksgiving, we'll begin learning about gratitude -- and being aware of and thankful for the good things that happen in our lives.
To learn more about it check out the character card linked on our school website. You can find that by clicking here: https://powelles.fcps.edu/about/positivity-project.

It was our honor to celebrate the veterans in our community during our Annual Veterans Day Program this past Monday. |
The classroom representatives from the Student Council Association (SCA) greeted the veterans in the library with a continental breakfast.
|
It was touching to see the tears of gratitude on the veteran’s faces as they spoke with our students, one another, and then paraded through the kindergarten and first grade halls.
|
During the program our SCA officers did a tremendous job leading the charge and our music team expertly led us through a beautiful morning of song, poetry, and words of gratitude. Once again, we thank our veterans for their service to our country.
On Wednesday, November 12, Centreville High School exchange students from South Korea visited our Korean Immersion classes.
|
|
In 2nd grade Korean Immersion, the exchange students taught the 2nd grade Immersion students Origami, Cat's Cradle, and Gonggi, which are all widely played in South Korea.
|
|
 |
Our students had a lot of fun learning from the exchange students and getting to know them.
|
Also, during science, the students are learning all about the weather and the storms. |
|
 |
 |
|
Students are working hard learning the science vocabulary both in Korean and in English. |
Students are looking at the weather pictures and sorting the Korean weather words appropriately in groups. |

Our annual CPES Thanksgiving Luncheon will take place on Friday, November 22, 2019. This is such a fun event! We are in need of more Hostesses to pass out napkins and utensils. If you like to be behind the scenes, we'll need help in the kitchen washing dishes! Please contact Beth Schoonover at mbschoonover@fcps.edu if you can help!
Pizza will be served on Thursday, November 21st.

As temperatures have dropped in the morning, our Kiss & Ride line has gotten longer making students late for school. To help all students start the school day on time, and help us maintain a manageable number of cars in Kiss & Ride, we encourage bus riders to ride the bus. We appreciate everyone working together to ensure a smooth morning routine.
Thank you to everyone who helped to recognize the exceptional work that happens at Colin Powell each day. Below are the nominees that have been named for the 2019-2020 FCPS Outstanding Awards. "The Anxious Student"
Parents are invited to join several members of the CVHS clinical team in a pyramid-wide presentation/discussion regarding student anxiety. We will discuss what anxiety can look like both at home and at school, how it impacts school attendance and work completion, and when it becomes a significant complication. We will offer practical tips for parents and provide information regarding available resources in the school setting.
We love when you take the opportunity to visit your child and eat lunch with his/her class in the cafeteria. We have a few friendly requests and reminders to promote a pleasant environment for all of our students during lunch.
Please reinforce the following expectations when eating lunch with your child:
- Starting second quarter, supply caddies will be on each lunch table providing students with easy access to forks, spoons and napkins. Students with a packed lunch should continue to bring utensils from home. When items are forgotten students may use what is in the caddy.
- Students are to pass through the lunch line ONE time; students may not return for additional food (entrée, snack, or dessert).
- Students should feed themselves and do this every day.
- Students should remain seated at all times.
- Students should ask permission from the hostess to use the bathroom or get a drink of water.
We kindly ask that you refrain from the following:
- Bringing in outside food, such a fast food, and delivering it to your child.
- Taking videos or photos during breakfast and lunch. This policy protects the privacy of our students and honors request of parents who have chosen to opt their child out of school video and photography.
With the changing weather our lost and found has a collection of almost 60 jackets, sweaters & hoodies along with some lunch items. When you visit the school please check lost and found, in the cafeteria, for items your child may be missing.

SEEKING SPONSORS & DONATIONS
Students in the sixth grade Korean Immersion program are eagerly preparing for an exciting Capstone Learning Experience in South Korea in April. It is an honor for our school to be able to support this opportunity for students who have been studying Korean language and culture since they were in kindergarten, and the expense of such a trip is significant. Donations in any amount from our community neighbors and businesses will help bring this trip within reach for our students. Contributions can be made either by check payable to CPES or using this link for online donations: https://powelles.fcps.edu/announcements/fundraiser-korean-immersion-capstone-trip. If your business is interested in sponsoring this learning experience through a tax deductible donation, please contact Kimberle Pendergrass (kapendergras@fcps.edu) for more information. Thank you!
