WTW PTSO WeMail - November 12

November PTSO Meeting

Please join us for the November PTSO meeting TONIGHT, November 12th at 7 p.m. in the library.

We will be reviewing and voting on the grants applications. This is also a great opportunity to hear straight from WTW administration about how things are going at school and ask them any questions. We are fortunate that Dr. Floyd, and often an Assistant Principal, make it a priority to attend our meetings each month. Note that we will not meet in December!

Thank you Woodson Environmental Club and PTSO Member Haydee Cooper

A few months ago, PTSO member Haydee Cooper contacted the PTSO Board to ask about planting more trees on the Woodson campus with the help of the non-profit organization Fairfax ReLeaf .  The PTSO Board connected Haydee with the WTW Environmental Club and the idea “took root” immediately.

Woodson’s Environmental Club partnered with Fairfax ReLeaf and other Woodson organizations including SNHS, NHS, Key Club and leadership to plant 15 native trees around campus.  In addition, they tended the native trees planted by the Orchestra door and cleaned up one of the library courtyards.  We had 40 student volunteers and three adults including Lauren Kinne (the science department chair), Aaron Morgan (the band director) and Taylor from Fairfax ReLeaf.  Many thanks to all!

Fall Sports Highlights

Woodson Varsity Field Hockey met TC Williams in the Semi-finals of the Region Tournament.  The Titans initiated the scoring.  The Cavalier response came off a corner from Gwyneth Durosko’s insert to Senior Anna Stribling and back to Durosko who lofted the ball over the defense into the far corner of the net.  Durosko assisted the game winner scored by Senior Margaret Stephan.  Final, 2-1.  Cavs win.

This recap begins with the assertion that you really can’t miss a Fairfax-Woodson field hockey game.  The Occoquan Regional final match-up was further proof.  Allie Maahs and Gwyneth Durosko were all over the Rebels.  Senior goaltender Sydney Allen was a stalwart.  What the Lady Cavs have done all season, they did tonight, complete team commitment.  There was a lot of team energy that maintained offensive pressure.  The girls clearly wanted this game.  At halftime, the game was even at 0. Kelley Gross minded the sticks in the second half and was called upon for four saves including one that put her one-on-one with the Rebel attacker.  Senior Izzy Gonzales worked tirelessly and Zoe Hite was nonstop productive action.  At full time, the score keeper was unmoved.  In overtime, the ball circulated from Durosko to Gonzales who attacked the goal and crossed to Stephan who with the same kind of determination that the team played all night used a combination of dive, will, and determination to score the game winner.  Final, 1-0 WTW Girls Field Hockey wins the Regional Tournament Championship! On to States this week!

Our WTW District Champs Girls Volleyball team took Justice High in 3 sets on Thursday night for their first regional game win! All our players took the court and contribute to the win. Hitters Amy Burkhardt, Jordan Lyons and Middle, Maja Zuber, led the team with kills. Those numbers were what they were thanks to great defense by Jaden Reasor and our setters Nicole Gibson and Erin McPhilomy putting the ball where it needed to be. The Cavs move on to the semi-final game against Lake Braddock on Tuesday, November 12 at Woodson - 7:00pm. This is going to be an intense game with great competition and high quality volleyball. Lake Braddock has a large following and will be filling our gym with fans. We need support from the student body and Woodson families to help cheer these ladies to a victory and on to region finals. Come out this Tuesday at 7pm and be loud Woodson!!!
