November 8, 2019

Dear Halley Families,

We can hardly believe that we’ve come to the end of a quarter.   It was wonderful to see all our parents and families during conference time. We love and appreciate partnering with you!   Students have worked hard and on Thursday, 11/14/19, everyone in Grades 1st – 6th will receive their first progress report for the year.  We encourage you to celebrate the accomplishments of your children and help them set goals for continued improvement. As you reflect with your child(ren) on the progress they’ve made thus far, we offer the following questions connected to the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate skill, “Goal-Directed and Resilient Learner” to start your conversations:

  • How were you goal-directed and resilient this quarter?
  • From the mistake____, what did you learn?
  • How did you keep trying when _____ was hard?
  • If you want to ___, what’s a goal that you might make? What could be your plan to meet the goal?

We always want to encourage reflection and goal-setting with our children. Thank you for taking the time to have these important conversations! Kind regards.

Your Principals,

Ms. Johnson, Dr. Simpkins, and Mrs. Peerman

The Importance of Sleep for Kids

Good Night, Sleep TIght

Research has shown that children who regularly get enough sleep have improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, and overall mental and physical health.  Children’s brains need sleep so they can remember what they learn, pay attention and concentrate, solve problems, and think of new ideas. Their bodies need sleep to allow muscles, bones, and skin to grow, fix injuries, stay healthy, and fight illness. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends 10-13 hours of sleep for children age 3-5 and 9-12 hours for children 6-12. If you find your child having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep try the following suggestions:

  • Stop the use of electronics/screens at least an hour before bed
  • Limit caffeine (e.g., sodas) in the afternoon and at night.
  • Exercise during the day: running and playing at least 3 hours before bed helps the body get ready for sleep.
  • Avoid big meals before bedtime.
  • Create a bedtime routine: do some relaxing things before bed each night, like taking a warm shower, reading, or listening to quiet music.
  • Stick with the same bedtimes and awake times.
  • Create a good environment for sleeping (dark or as dim as possible, quiet, and cool)
  • Take a warm bath
  • Do a quiet family activity such as reading a short book
