Dear Rocky Run Families -
Happy November and welcome to the second quarter of the 19-20 school year. We hope our families and students enjoyed the long weekend and some time together. The Rocky Run staff was happy to welcome our students back this week.
I have been away from school chaperoning the Warriner Exchange trip to England with 23 of our amazing students. Mrs. Sciabica, Mrs. Bickford, Ms. Robertson, Mr. Linck and I have learned so much about the history of England, the structure of school and classes, and have enjoyed connecting with our colleagues from across the pond. Our teachers taught in classes and then we all enjoyed trips to Oxford, Bletchley Park and Blenheim Palace. The students have been outstanding and we look forward to sharing what we have learned when we return to school on Monday, November 11. We will welcome our English friends to RRMS at the beginning of April 2020.

Positivity Project (11/6 - 11/26): Gratitude
We are focusing the entire month of November on the character trait of gratitude. Out of all 24 character strengths, gratitude is the single best predictor of individual well-being. It is correlated with increased energy, empathy, happiness and optimism.
WHAT DOES GRATITUDE MEAN?
Gratitude is the quality of feeling and expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is an affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world, and that we have received that goodness. People with the strength of gratitude have a readiness to show appreciation for kindness and also to return kindness. A leading expert, Robert Emmons, calls gratitude a “relationship strengthening emotion because it requires us to see how we’ve been supported and affirmed by other people.”
7th Grade Field Trip
On November 15th, Rocky Run Middle School is taking Seventh graders to Washington DC and Arlington Cemetery. In this walking field experience, students learn more about the key events and people they study this year in their U.S. history classes. Students will investigate symbols and designs of the WWII, Korean and Vietnam War memorials, as well as the legacies of famous people such as Dr. King, Franklin Roosevelt, the Kennedy family, and more. With their teachers and parent chaperones, students greatly ponder the meaning of sacrifice and the contributions of those who have served. In it’s 15th year, this field trip had in the past included visits to the Pentagon Memorial, Marine Corps Memorial, Teddy Roosevelt Island, and in welcoming Honor Flights to the WWII Memorial. It’s a unique and powerful day of learning and appreciation.
First Quarter Student Progress
First quarter report cards will be mailed home on Tuesday, November 5. Parents can receive Weekly Progress Reports via email through SIS Parent VUE but they were not sent during the First Quarter Grading period from Wed. Oct 30 to Fri. Nov 8. Your child's teacher is always the best resource to answer any grade-related questions that you may have. Also, contact your child's counselor for any questions.

7th Grade Students - Wellness Screening
Rocky Run Middle School is conducting a Wellness Screening on November 20 & 21 during 7th Grade Health/PE classes as part of the Signs of Suicide (SOS) ® Prevention Program. The program has proven to be successful at increasing help-seeking behaviors by students concerned about themselves or a friend. The program centers around the “Acknowledge, Care, Tell (ACT)” approach.
If you do NOT wish for your child to take the Brief Screen for Adolescent Depression (written screening questionnaire), please complete the online Opt-Out Form: by Wednesday, November 13th. Please note that ALL Students will still view the video presentation encouraging them to learn about ACT.
If you have any questions or concerns about the program, please do not hesitate to contact your child's school counselor.
