CHINA EXCHANGE PROGRAM

Applications are now open for students to host and/or travel to China in 2020 as part of our very first China Exchange Program at Longfellow Middle School!
We will be welcoming 15-20 students from our partner school in China, from Friday, January 31st to Friday, February 7th, 2020. They will be hosted by Longfellow students and immersed in classes during the week with all programming to be coordinated by our trusted third party Alpha Exchange. For each student hosted, families will receive a $200 stipend or $500 credit towards the China trip during Spring Vacation. The trip will run from Wednesday, April 1st to Saturday, April 11th and cost $3,200 per student ($2,700 or $2,400 for students that hosted 1-2 students). We will visit our partner school and homestay with the Chinese exchange students in Yichang and enjoy 3 days of sightseeing in Beijing, including visits to the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall of China.
Contact Ms. Madeline Coyne for more information and signup at this link.

LONGFELLOW LOVE BUSINESS SPONSOR

Help us kick off this season of giving and become a Longfellow Love Business Sponsor!
Do you own a business, or know someone who does? If so, we need your support! We are excited to announce our 1st annual Longfellow Love Jam-a-thon to help raise money for our Longfellow Love Student Assistance Program supporting our very own student families in need, and benefiting the Longfellow community. Did you know that over 100 of our Longfellow families receive free and reduced lunch and have difficulty meeting basic needs?

We’d love to advertise your business through this important community partnership. Your business will be promoted on a large banner placed at the school entrance, and through Longfellow Middle School's weekly newsletter which reaches over 2,000 families. Help make a difference in the lives of these families by sponsoring this important community event. We need help covering the costs of food and fun activities so that all funds raised will benefit our families in need. Any amount would be greatly appreciated to help cover the costs!

Questions? Please contact Shelly Breslin at vpfundraising.ptalms@gmail.com. for more information about how to become a Longfellow Love Business Sponsor.
We need all donation commitments by Monday, November 18th.

Thank you in advance for your generous support of this important community program!

FAIRFAX COUNTY SCHOOL HEALTH PROMOTION

“Your Breath Matters. Your Choices Matter.”
E-cigarette use among teens is on the rise and can have many negative health implications. Vaping products contain metals, chemicals, and other substances that not only lead to addiction, but may cause lung-related injury. Teens are more likely to become addicted to e-cigarettes, because brain pathways in teen brains develop faster than adults. Most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and can harm brain development – which continues until about age 25.
It is important that you talk to and educate your teen about the dangers of e-cigarette use. There are many resources available that help support vaping cessation and promote healthy decision-making.
Resource Corner:
QUITline – 1-800-Quit-Now is a free, effective, and confidential hotline for ages 13+. This service is available 24/7 and provides one-on-one assistance.
The Real Cost – Informational site that gives teens the real facts about tobacco products. For more information visit https://therealcost.betobaccofree.hhs.gov/.
Smokefree Teen – quitSTART is a free smartphone app that helps you quit using tobacco with tailored tips, inspiration, and challenges.
