Justice SB Day
Justice SB Day 2

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

We had lots of fun on Thursday as we celebrated Story Book Character Day. Faculty and students shared their favorite characters from books and movies they love.

Just a reminder, schools will be closed for students on Monday, November 4, for a school planning day and Tuesday, November 5, for a teacher work day. Friday, November 1, was the last day of the first quarter. Classes will resume on Wednesday, November 6. Also, the Student Information System (SIS) Gradebook and Report Card modules will be closed through 6 a.m. on November 9 while teachers complete report cards.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or school staff. We are happy to help.

Federal Impact Aid Forms

FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 15. All results are confidential.

Technology Support Fee

FCPSOn, our digital transformation initiative, expanded to all Fairfax County public high schools starting with the 2019-20 school year. As part of FCPSOn, all high school students were issued a device for learning. High school students will be assessed an annual technology support fee of $50 in conjunction with the FCPSOn implementation. The technology support fee will help ensure students have access to the technology they need by defraying the cost to repair and replace equipment. Students who have a Free and Reduced status and have given consent to share their FRM status for waiver or reduction of the technology support fee will be charged $25 for Reduced status; the fee will be waived for Free status. Parents will be invoiced for the technology support fee in November 2019 via Myschoolbucks.com. Arrangements can be made for parents who prefer to pay the invoice in person.

Fall Update Mailing

Be on the lookout for a letter to arrive through the US mail with important information about report card distribution, ways to stay in touch, and student attendance. We encourage you to set up a SIS Parent Account to access your child’s information, including grades and attendance information. If you do not have your activation letter and activation code, contact our Student Information Assistant, Amanda Armitage amarmitage@fcps.edu or 703-824-3933. For more information on ways to receive communication from FCPS, please visit https://www.fcps.edu/resources/parent-communication-overview..

Additionally, the Grade Book and Report Card modules in ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be closed Friday, Nov. 1, at 4 p.m. through Saturday, Nov. 9, at 6 a.m. This report provides a summary of your student(s) grades for the current quarter. To activate the Weekly Progress Reports via email, login to your SIS ParentVUE Account and go to the “My Account” tab to verify your email and select your preferences for receiving these reports.

Report Cards

Report cards will be distributed on Tues, Nov 12 during 3rd period for students to bring home and share with parents/guardians. Please contact your child’s teacher if you would like to discuss any grading concerns.

Honor Roll

The 1st quarter honor roll ceremony for “All A” student recipients will be in the auditorium on Wednesday, November 20th during Return Time from 10:42-11:12 a.m. Parents are invited to attend, however the ceremony will be brief.

College Entrance Testing

November 8th is the next registration deadline for the ACT and SAT. For test dates, registration and score reporting, students should visit: SAT – www.collegeboard.org or ACT – www.actstudent.org. Both the College Board (SAT, PSAT, AP) and ACT have established policies and deadlines for students with a professionally diagnosed and documented disability who apply for reasonable accommodations. For more information, please contact Beth Marino, the Justice HS Special Education Resource Teacher at eemarino@fcps.edu.

Pathway to the Baccalaureate Program

November 8th is the deadline for seniors to apply to the NOVA Pathways Program. Through the pathway program, students participate in one-on-one meetings with a Pathway Counselor to develop an individualized plan for college transition. Students are also invited to regular workshops on key transition issues, including college placement testing and financial planning.

Students will receive access to personalized assistance with applying for financial aid and scholarships, early placement testing, academic advising and priority registration, and comprehensive summer orientation programs.

Class of 2020- Virginia College Application Week (VCAW) November 18-22

Justice HS will be participating in Virginia’s College Application Week (VCAW).  VCAW is part of a national initiative designed to increase the number of first- generation and low-income students pursuing a college degree or other higher education credential. Participating students are encouraged to submit at least one college application during the week. Students Services has planned activities to provide students hands-on college application assistance and resources, including application fee waivers and informational materials. Events during VCAW will include but not limited to: College Application and Essay Assistance, On Site Admission Days, FAFSA Assistance. Contact Ms. Grande, Career Center Specialist, at agrande@fcps.edu for more information.

Senior Transcripts/Letters of Recommendation

Students must turn in their transcript requests to the Student Services office 30 days in advance of the college deadline. Students who are applying to colleges with a December 1st deadline need to submit their requests now. Seniors need to be mindful of the impact of the upcoming winter break when counselors and teachers will not available from 12/23/19 - 01/03/20. Students who do not submit a transcript request prior to break will have their requests processed after break. As long as the student has submitted the application on time, most colleges will offer some leniency in the deadline for the documents that the school must provide. College application sites can sometimes become overloaded on submission deadline dates so students are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible to avoid any glitches that may prevent the application from being received by the official deadline. These reminders are sent in an effort to avoid unnecessary stress. Please contact your child’s counselor if you have any questions.
