Willow Springs Elementary Weekly Message 11-8-2019

November 8, 2019

students participating in extreme reading

Willow Springs Families,

Tonight our 5th grade teachers and their students will celebrate literacy during their annual Extreme Reading event. Loaded up with books, sleeping bags, pillows, and snacks, students will spend the first part of their evening with teachers and friends reading their favorite books. Later, they will have the opportunity to listen to guest story teller Gary Loyd, enjoy some pizza in the cafeteria, and participate in reading related relay games. It’s always a fun time when our school lobby is filled with students curled up in sleeping bags, enjoying a good book.

Please remember that there's still time to vote for our WTOP Junior Reporter finalist! Visit the WTOP Junior Reporter website and search for Madelyn. You can vote one time per day through Nov. 10, 2019, and your votes will ultimately help determine the winner. Winners will receive $1000 for themselves and $1,000 for our school! Madelyn will receive VIP treatment including a tour and a chance to be featured on-air should she win! Cast your vote here!

We also want to give a big thank you to everyone who participated in the FCPS Employee Honors nomination process! This is a wonderful way to honor the dedicated employees who make our wonderful school the very best it can be. You’re invited to please take a moment and cast your ballot. It would mean a lot to our educators who give so much of themselves every day to have your support.

Be sure to follow us on twitter @WSESfox to see the magic happen every day.

Enjoy your weekend,

Mr. Taylor, Principal

Mrs. Green, Assistant Principal

Ms. Hassen, Assistant Principal

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue firefighters from Legato Station 40 take time out of their busy day to visit our kindergarten students and bring awareness to fire safety! The day included sessions on developing a fire plan for their house and meeting firefighters from nearby Fire Station 40! As always, we are grateful for all of our local first responders and are thankful for all they do in keeping our community safe!

AAP Level IV Screening Information Session

Monday, December 2, 2019

9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.

Willow Springs Cafeteria

If you are planning to refer your child for the level IV AAP program and would like additional guidance and information, Mrs. Murray, our Advanced Academic Resource Teacher will review procedures, time frames, and answer questions regarding what should be included in the referral file and how documents need to be submitted. Information is also available on the web at:  https://www.fcps.edu/registration/advanced-academics-identification-and-placement/current-fcps-students

Since it is not possible to meet individually with each family to review files, this is a great opportunity to go over guidelines for screening files to ensure that you are submitting your child’s file completely and accurately. Geared towards grades 2-6.

FCPS Now Using the Here Comes the Bus Mobile App

To help you know when your child’s bus is approaching your stop, FCPS is now using the Here Comes the Bus mobile app. Here Comes the Bus is a free school bus tracking app that can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving real-time bus location and text or email notification alerts, helping everybody get to the bus stop on time.

Here Comes the Bus® uses FCPS global positioning system (GPS) data and an easy-to-use customizable map that works on one or multiple devices, such as a tablet or smartphone.

Get detailed instructions on how to get started using the Here Comes the Bus mobile app.
