FCPS Receives 2019 Climate and Energy Leadership Award from Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments
Fairfax County Public Schools is one of three recipients of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments 2019 Climate and Energy Leadership Awards for its outstanding efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and engage and serve underserved communities.

Events and Training Opportunities
A Few Spaces Still Available for FCPS Garden to Cafeteria Workshop
FCPS Get2Green, the Office of FCPS Food and Nutrition Services, and the Fairfax Food Council Urban Agriculture Working Group are hosting a Garden to Cafeteria Workshop on Tuesday, November 5 from 10am-noon in the Hollin Meadows Elementary School library followed by an optional networking lunch from noon-1pm. Learn about Garden to Cafeteria programs, what Garden to Cafeteria looks like in FCPS, and how to start a Garden to Cafeteria program at your school.

America Recycles Day is Friday, November 15
America Recycles Day is Friday, November 15. Do you know what can be recycled in FCPS? The Get2Green website’s recycling tab has all the information you need to make sure your waste makes it into the correct bin.
2nd Annual Mount Vernon Environment Expo is Saturday, November 16
Supervisor Dan Storck invites you to participate in the 2nd Annual Mount Vernon District Environment Expo: How YOU Can Act on Climate Change on Saturday, November 16 from 8am-noon at Walt Whitman Middle School. This event will educate and inform local residents on climate challenges that we face on a daily basis. Attendees will leave the Expo with simple actions that can be taken to make an impact on climate change. Highlights include an electric vehicle showcase, exhibit hall, workshops, and a film screening. Find more details about the Mount Vernon Environment Expo here.
Grants and Contests
Trex Plastic Film Recycling Challenge
Join hundreds of schools nationwide in collecting as much plastic film as possible to keep it out of landfills. The schools that collect the most plastic film will receive a composite bench. The challenge begins on America Recycles Day on November 15 and lasts until April 15. Trex will provide your school with promotional materials and three recycling bins. A volunteer must weigh and report the collected materials each month before delivering them to a participating drop-off retailer location. Winners will be announced on Earth Day.

KidsGardening Youth Garden Grant
The Youth Garden Grant 2020 is accepting applications for schools planning a new garden program or expanding an established one. Applications are due Monday, December 16. Learn more about the Youth Garden Grant and how to apply here.
Chesapeake Bay Trust Environmental Education Mini Grants
The Chesapeake Bay Trust’s Mini Environmental Education Grant Program is accepting applications for funding to support meaningful outdoor learning experiences around a watershed issue investigation including field trips, fieldwork, student-led action projects, and schoolyard habitat projects. Up to $5,000 is available and all non-Title I schools are required to provide funding for at least half of their field trip or experience costs. The deadline to apply is January 9, 2020. Young Reporters for the Environment Accepting Applications
Students between the ages of 11 and 19 are invited to participate in the Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) competition. YRE asks students to investigate environmental issues and propose solutions through journalism using strategies in writing, photography, and videography to tell their story. Students must register to join the 2020 competition by January 31, 2020 and the deadlines for submissions is February 28, 2020.
