#OurFCPS Faces: Gordon Brown

Gordon Brown, Mount Vernon HS ESOL teacher

There are many extraordinary people at Fairfax County Public Schools. Gordon Brown is one of them. Gordon has worked for FCPS for almost 12 years. He taught at Glasgow MS and Fairfax HS before joining Mount Vernon HS.

The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) teacher recently won an FCPS 2019 Excellence Award in the Impact on Others category. Gordon says, “In my capacity as director of the nonprofit, A Place to Stand, I ensure the school is supplied with enough fresh and nonperishable food to feed our hungry students and families.” That’s exactly why Gordon was nominated for the award.

Rose Bottle, a learning disabilities teacher at Mount Vernon HS, nominated Gordon. She writes, “In the classroom, Gordon takes on our most vulnerable students by teaching ESOL English Level 1 and our most gifted by teaching IB [International Baccalaureate] Theory of Knowledge. As if this incredible feat of flexible teaching were not enough, Gordon also helps feed our hungry kids through his Food Pantry Club supported by his non-profit organization, A Place to Stand. Gordon saw a need at Mount Vernon where over 50 percent of our students are food insecure. The food pantry was underutilized due to the stigma of asking for food. Gordon used student volunteers and established a barrier-free after school food program and 'satellite food pantries' in the classrooms of willing teachers. As a result, no student at Mount Vernon has any reason to go hungry.”

Gordon believes the best part of his work is "developing relationships with colleagues and students as well as teaching and learning with colleagues and students.”

When Gordon isn’t teaching or organizing the food pantry, he enjoys traveling, playing guitar, and spending time with family.

Gordon, thank you for your monumental impact on students!
