1. Fall Production: Letters to Sala

Woodson Drama's fall play, Letters to Sala will run on the weekends starting tonight, Friday, November 1st through Saturday, November 9th.

Adapted from the book Sala’s Gift by Ann Kirschner and based on a true account, Letters to Sala is a remarkable story of a young girl's survival during wartime Germany. Five years. Seven Nazi labor camps. Over 350 hidden letters. Sala Garncarz Kirschner kept her secret for over fifty years, concealing her incredibly painful history in a Spill and Spell box. Everything changes when Sala reveals the cache to her grown daughter, Ann.

Tickets are available online at www.wtwdrama.org.

The Connection Newspaper featured a story on Woodson's production in today's issue.

2. Federal Impact Aid Forms

Federal Impact Aid forms were sent home last week and were due today.  Please complete the form promptly and have your teen return it to their 7th Period teacher.  FCPS requires 100% of forms to be completed, signed and returned.  Calls and emails will be sent to parents whose forms are not returned today in order to achieve the required 100% participation.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3 and sign the form.  All forms were due today. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

3. Early Checkouts from School

For early dismissals, please complete this Check-Out Form or write a note that includes the student name, date, time your student needs to be released from class, reason for early check-out, parent signature, and contact number.  Students must bring the note to the Attendance Office in the morning to receive a pink check-out pass.  At the time of dismissal, your son/daughter will bring the pink check-out pass back to the Attendance Office for verification before meeting you outside.

Due to staff responsibilities at the end of the day, we are not able to honor unannounced early dismissals within 15 minutes of school dismissal.

Please know that during the school day we will do our best to retrieve students for unannounced early dismissals; to ensure timely dismissal please follow the procedures above.

For full details on Attendance Procedures, please visit the Attendance page on the Woodson website.

Fall Hey Day

Students celebrate Hey Day, a clubs and activities fair last Wednesday.

4. SIS Reports, Gradebook & Report Cards

Today is the last day of the first quarter.

Report cards will be distributed through 7th period classes on Friday, November 15th.  Students who do not have a 7th period class may pick up their report cards in Student Services starting on Friday, November 15th.

FCPS Weekly Progress Reports will not be sent to parents Wednesday, October 30th through Friday, November 8th during first quarter grading and report card generation.

Additionally, the Grade Book and Report Card modules in ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be closed Friday, November 1st, at 4 p.m. through Saturday, November 9th, at 6 a.m.

5. Activating Weekly Progress Reports

If you have registered for SIS ParentVUE and have a primary email address recorded in ParentVUE, you can receive your student’s Weekly Progress Report via email. This report provides a summary of your student’s grades for the current quarter.

To activate the Weekly Progress Reports via email, login to your SIS ParentVUE account and verify that you have a primary email address within the system. It is listed under the “My Account” tab. If it is blank, enter the email address where you would like to receive the progress reports, and click on “Update account.”

Once your email is confirmed, return to the “My Account” tab to activate and select your preferences for receiving these reports. Emails will be sent according to your selected preferences. Weekly Progress Reports for all of your middle and high school students will be included in one email. For additional help, refer to the quick reference guide for FCPS parents/guardians.

8. Administrative changes at Woodson

As we announced two weeks ago, Dr. Disalvo will be going to Annandale High school for a new experience.  We are excited for her to have this opportunity but sad to see her go.  She will return in a few months!

I am pleased to share that Mr. Marc Brooks has been promoted to acting assistant principal to fill Dr. Disalvo’s position.  In this role, Mr. Brooks will be the 10th grade administrator.

Mr. Brooks has been with us as our Dean of Students for the last 14 months, a role that has helped to decrease our tardies and class cuts by 15%.  He has also been an active member of our Equity and Cultural Responsiveness team and is an assistant cheer coach.  Prior to coming to Woodson HS, Mr. Brooks taught special education at Langley HS and served our country in the Navy.  Mr. Brooks can be reached at drbrooks@fcps.edu or 703-503-4609.

Ms. Ellen Hagan-Bowerman will now assume the role of working with students on tardies and class cuts.  She will work closely with the counselors to help find the source of the behaviors and collaborate with families to problem solve the individual student situations.  She is a member of our Health and Physical Education department.  In addition to working with students in this new role, she will continue her responsibilities as Woodson's building use coordinator.  Ms. Hagan-Bowerman can be reached at emhaganbower@fcps.edu or 703-503-4686.

Please help me welcome these staff members into their new roles!  Feel free to reach out at any time if you have any questions or concerns.

Thank you,
Dr. Floyd, Principal

Please bring gardening gloves, water, and a shovel if you have one.  Extra shovels will be available.  Contact Woodson science department chair and Environmental sponsor Lauren Kinne at lwkinne@fcps.edu.

10. Cav Cares Cards

Cav Cares cards are a way that students, parents, community members and staff can recognize Woodson faculty and staff members with notes of appreciation.

This month, Ms. Kelsey Treague received a Cav Cares card that said, "Ms. Treague is always available to answer my questions and never makes me feel bad for bugging her!  I totally appreciate it!"

You can recognize a Woodson faculty or staff member by filling out a Cav Cares card in the main office.

14. National Career Development Month

Career research in high school can help students discover what they enjoy giving direction for potential post-secondary training.

Career research is college research because planned careers suggest majors that might support chosen careers.  Students can then seek colleges with those majors and/or post-secondary training that supports chosen careers.

Spend some time this month doing focused career research.  See what you can discover!
