Justice Newsletter - October 27, 2019

"To get better, we're gonna have mistakes. We're gonna have tough times. We're gonna learn how to win. But the only way you're gonna learn how to win is through all those mistakes and failures. I'll tell you all those failures have paid off today." ~ Howie Kendrick

Marching Band

A Note from Principal Eck

Dear Justice Families,

Shout out to the Justice High School marching band. On Saturday, they earned a superior rating at the VBODA Marching Band Assessment.

Just a reminder, that underclassmen pictures will be taken on October 28th or 29th through students' English classes. If your student is unable to take their picture on the scheduled day, the make-up day is December 2nd.

On Thursday, October 31st, we will celebrate Storybook Character Day. Students and staff are encouraged to dress up as their favorite characters from books they love.

It is with great pleasure that I announce that Ms. Malicia Braxton, current Director of Student Services at West Springfield High School, has accepted a staff development position as Assistant Principal at Justice High School. Ms. Braxton will be working with our administrative team to cover while Mr. Kagarise is out on leave and later Ms. Vandawalker. She is scheduled to be at Justice from October 28th through March 1, 2020.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or school staff. We are happy to help.

The Justice HS PTSA Grant Committee greatly enjoyed reading the grant applications and truly appreciate the applicants' creativity and commitment to learning and the success of our students. We look forward to hearing more about the impact of these grant awards as the teachers implement them and students experience the benefit of these materials, tools, and experience.

Federal Impact Aid Forms

FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by November 15. All results are confidential.

SIS Weekly Progress Report Emails

FCPS Weekly Progress Reports will not be sent to parents Wednesday, Oct. 30 through Friday, Nov. 8 during first quarter grading and report card generation. Additionally, the Grade Book and Report Card modules in ParentVUE and StudentVUE will be closed Friday, Nov. 1, at 4 p.m. through Saturday, Nov. 9, at 6 a.m. This report provides a summary of your student(s) grades for the current quarter. To activate the Weekly Progress Reports via email, login to your SIS ParentVUE Account and go to the “My Account” tab to verify your email and select your preferences for receiving these reports.

Justice HS Nomination Scholarships - Class of 2020

There are a number of scholarships that are available for seniors for which Justice HS can nominate one student for consideration. The Jefferson Scholar (UVA) self-nomination form is due by October 31st. Interested students must fill out the linked Google Form. The Jefferson Scholarship selection process is designed to give students an opportunity to showcase their excellence in leadership, citizenship, and scholarship.  For the 2018-2019 competition, the Foundation received close to 2,000 nominations from secondary schools participating in the regional competitions. The Career Center will collect self-nomination forms and then a committee will determine which students move forward as the Justice HS nominee for consideration.

College Entrance Testing

November 8th is the next registration deadline for the ACT and SAT. For test dates, registration and score reporting, students should visit: SAT – www.collegeboard.org or ACT – www.actstudent.org. Both the College Board (SAT, PSAT, AP) and ACT have established policies and deadlines for students with a professionally diagnosed and documented disability who apply for reasonable accommodations. For more information, please contact Beth Marino, the Justice HS Special Education Resource Teacher at eemarino@fcps.edu.

Pathway to the Baccalaureate Program

November 8th is the deadline for seniors to apply to the NOVA Pathways Program. Through the pathway program, students participate in one-on-one meetings with a Pathway Counselor to develop an individualized plan for college transition. Students are also invited to regular workshops on key transition issues, including college placement testing and financial planning.

Students will receive access to personalized assistance with applying for financial aid and scholarships, early placement testing, academic advising and priority registration, and comprehensive summer orientation programs.

Advanced Placement (AP)/ International Baccalaureate (IB) Test Fees

Please see the FCPS website for detailed information about fees for AP and IB exams. Please note that if a student is registered for a test but does not sit for the test, if it is an FCPS-funded test, students will be charged a fee. If it is beyond the six FCPS-funded tests, the students will be responsible for the non-refundable test fee. Unpaid fees will revert to student financial obligations.
