Superintendent’s Excellence in Equity Award

Cub Run has been selected to receive the Superintendent’s Excellence in Equity Award.

Dr. Brabrand and the School Board have created a new and very important recognition to celebrate our school’s progress and achievement as we continue to raise the bar and close student achievement gaps.  After a careful analysis of the Division SOL data, Cub Run has earned a Level 1 performance for each reporting group and all gap group indicators in both English and mathematics for the 2018-19 school year.  We are very proud of this accomplishment!

Parent - Student Handbook Reminder

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS (TREAT-FREE POLICY)

We ask that families consider ways to celebrate student birthdays in a joyful manner while minimizing the impact on instructional time and creating a safe and equitable environment for all our students.

There are a multitude of health issues that were taken into consideration. First and foremost is educating students to make smart nutritional choices as we try to encourage students to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a healthy weight. There are also many students who are at risk when outside food is brought into the school environment. These health risks impact many of our students who live daily with diabetes, food allergies, and chronic illnesses such as Celiac disease, etc.

To make the environment safe and comfortable for all students, while still allowing for a celebration of each child’s birthday, we ask families to adhere to donating a book, board game, or piece of recess equipment in their child’s honor or students may bring in ONE non-edible treat for each of their classmates, such as a pencil, bookmark or sticker (balloons, treat bags, etc., may not be sent in or distributed).

This treat-free policy does not apply to other special classroom parties and events. As homeroom teachers and parents work together to plan other special classroom celebrations, we ask that everyone take into account the individual needs of students in the classroom. In general, we hope we can work towards providing healthier options at all celebrations and events.

**NOTE: Birthday invitations for parties outside of school cannot be distributed by students and/or teachers during the school day.

“SPECIAL LUNCHES”

We are always happy to see a parent, grandparent, or older sibling come to eat with a student. It is a special occasion for the entire class. Visitors typically either purchase lunch from the cafeteria or bring a bag lunch from home. It is nice for the students to see that grownups also eat nutritious lunches. We ask that you do not bring soft drinks or “fast food” lunches. The sale of soft drinks to students is prohibited in all Fairfax County Public Schools, from elementary through high school, during the school day. The emphasis on nutritional eating is reflected in our health curriculum and in the selection of food sold in the cafeteria. We ask when you come to eat lunch with your child, you help us continue to model healthy, nutritious eating. It is your presence, more than anything, which makes the occasion special for your child. Please do not bring younger siblings and refrain from taking pictures or video during your visit of children other than your own child.

Elementary School Grades K-6 Parent Preview Notification Letter

Dear Parents/Guardians of Elementary School Students:

Students in grades K-6 participate in Family Life Education (FLE) instruction through their classroom teacher. Students in Kindergarten through grade three receive instruction in an emotional and social health unit. Students in grades 4-6 receive instruction in a human growth and development unit and an emotional and social health unit. For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle.

In addition, grade level-specific curriculum lessons are available for review in multiple locations.

  • Online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View - includes lessons and media titles that FCPS has streaming rights for. Any additional media or book titles that are not streamed are available at your child’s school library. Parents/guardians will need a SIS account to access FCPS 24-7. Account information is available at your local school or online at https://fcps.blackboard.com/https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/fcps-24-7-learning.
  • Your child’s school. Please contact the school to schedule a time to review lessons and/or media.

You are invited to attend an evening opportunity to preview the Family Life Education media and lessons and to talk with school staff about the program. The meeting will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2019 at 6PM in the Library. All program materials and media for all grade levels will be available for your review at this time.

Parents/guardians who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out of any or all of the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, please fill out the form provided to you in your child’s orientation packet at the beginning of the school year or you may access the opt out forms online at https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-family-life-education-fle. If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the form provided earlier in the school year, you do not need to complete another form. Should you opt your child out and then later decide you want your child included in FLE instruction, you must notify your child’s teacher in writing before instruction begins.

An alternative non-FLE health instructional program is provided for children who do not take part in FLE instruction, and every effort is made to foster understanding and respect for family choices and to avoid peer pressure for or against participation in the program.

Instruction occurs at various times for the instructional units during the school year. Please contact your child’s teacher for specific dates of FLE instruction. We look forward to working as your partner in providing information that will help your child make healthy choices related to the exciting changes and new challenges he/she will be facing in the next few years.
