Message from Mrs. Castillo

Nats

Thank you for the donations of books and gift cards for our teachers! I am so appreciative of your generosity and care for our staff.

There are two BIG community events coming up at Lemon Road! First and foremost, please join us at the Fun Fair on Saturday from 10 AM – 2 PM. This will be an event the whole family will enjoy with face painting, a bounce house, carnival games, rock climbing and more! If you haven’t purchased wristbands yet, just show up and you can get them at the door! Second, come to the next Principals’ Coffee on Friday, November 1. The topic will be about what resources are available to our families through the Parent Resource Center and through resources at Lemon Road. Also meet Mrs. Morales – our new parent liaison!

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon and GO NATS! ~ Mrs. Castillo

Thank you so much to the amazing Lemon Road PTA for polos for all students and staff. Wearing these polos is something that demonstrates true school pride. In addition to special events and field trips, we encourage EVERYONE to wear their polos at least once per month on our polo days, but students are welcome to wear the polo any day they choose! If any student is still in need of a polo for this year, please email LemonRoadPTA@ch2v.com to request one.

Positivity Project: Creativity

Creativity

I hope that your children are enjoying learning about perspective. Next week, we'll begin learning about creativity -- and looking at the world in new and original ways. For a 1-page overview, please click here. And, for Mike Erwin’s 1-minute message on creativity, please see the video here

Thursday, October 31: Costume Day

Costume Day

Our SCA votes on a spirit day for each Freaky Friday for the year.  Next week on Thursday, October 31, the spirit day is called costume day.  Remember this is the day we celebrate birthdays for the month of October.  Parents should collaborate with their room parent to determine how the birthdays will be celebrated in each classroom. While we cannot wait to see everyone’s costumes and spirit wear, costumes must:

  • Be appropriate and follow dress guidelines shared in Student Rights and Responsibilities
  • Contain no blood, gore, or signs and themes of violence
  • Not include play guns, swords, knives or weapons of any type
  • Allow full participation in the day and students to be seated at their desk
  • Not be bulky to the point that it interferes or impedes with other students or classroom activities

Substitute Teachers Needed

Costume Day

Have you ever considered applying to become a substitute teacher?  FCPS has a significant need for substitute teachers.  We've already had several days with teachers out on leave here at Lemon Road with no available substitutes.  When this occurs, we must rearrange our staff to cover the classrooms for the day.  As a substitute teacher, you choose the days and schools in which you are willing to work.  We’d love to develop a core group of Lemon Road parents who are available to serve as substitute teachers.  If you think this might be a good opportunity for you, please click here.

Veterans Day Plans

Veterans

On Monday, November 11, we welcome all Veterans and active military family, neighbors, and friends for breakfast and sharing in Lemon Road classrooms. Beginning at 8:20 AM, we will have a musical performance and breakfast in the cafeteria for the Veteran and school-aged child. Immediately following, we hope to match Veterans with as many classrooms for a read aloud or sharing. Please RSVP using this form to share your availability and we look forward to recognizing Veteran’s and active military in a few weeks!

Counselor's Corner: Gratitude

We are embarking on what is typically known as a “season of thanks” with Thanksgiving being the pinnacle of this time period.  Gratitude is a powerful attribute that goes beyond turkey day.  Building an “attitude of gratitude” within your children has many lifelong benefits.  A recent study found that gratitude had the strongest relationship to life satisfaction; one study linked gratitude to greater social support and protection from stress and depression over time.

Evidence from further studies suggests that grateful young adolescents compared to their less grateful counterparts, are happier and more optimistic, have better social support, are more satisfied with their school, family, community, friends, and themselves, and give more emotional support to others.

Here are seven key strategies from the book Making Grateful Kids, scientifically-based strategies that encourage gratitude in children—that is, appreciation for when somebody has done something kind or helpful for them or recognition of the good things and people they have in their lives..

  1. Model and teach gratitude - Our children want to be like us. Expressing gratitude through words, writing, and small gifts or acts of reciprocity are all ways to teach children how to become grateful.
  2. Spend time with your kids and be mindful when with them - Another way to spell love is T-I-M-E. Believe it or not, children and, yes, even adolescents, like being with their parents. Giving a child a lot of quality time with you teaches them the language of love—life’s greatest gift. Sav
  3. Support your child’s autonomy - By taking ownership over their skills and talents and being responsible for developing them, children gain things to appreciate in life and make it easier to attract support from others, thus inviting gratitude into their daily life.
  4. Use kids’ strengths to fuel gratitude - To directly promote gratitude, encourage and help your children to use their strengths to thank and be kind to others.
  5. Help focus and support kids to achieve intrinsic goals -  It’s our job to steer youth away from pursuing extrinsic goals and toward pursuing intrinsic goals, such as engaging in activities that provide community, affiliation, and growth; their personal development, happiness, success, and gratitude depend on it.
  6. Encourage helping others and nurturing relationships - When children lend a hand, especially while using their strengths, they feel more connected to those they’re helping, which helps them to develop and nurture friendships and social relationships.
  7. Help kids find what matters to them - Having a sense of purpose in life gives youth a compass for creating a meaningful life.

Cultivating an attitude of gratitude within our children isn’t just an issue for families; it’s an issue for society as well. Society desperately needs to harness the power of gratitude. As our world becomes more culturally diverse and digitally connected, and as complex societal problems mount, gratitude may help catalyze the motivation and skills youth need to succeed not just academically but in the “life test” too.  By bringing out the best in our children, we can only imagine what blessings “Generation Grateful” could bring.
