The Franklin Sherman Flash - Oct. 28

What's Happening in Kindergarten?

Kindergarten students have been learning about the life cycle of a pumpkin! On Friday, October 25, they visited Cox Farms.  The students went on a hayride and saw pumpkins growing in their natural habitat.  They also saw animals and haystacks.  Now the kindergarteners are looking forward to cutting open one of the pumpkins to explore its parts and learn even more about how pumpkins grow.

Meet Our New PHTA, Melanie Levesque!

My name is Melanie Levesque, and I am excited to work with the students at Franklin Sherman Elementary as a Public Health Teaching Assistant (PHTA). My family and I recently moved to Virginia and have really enjoyed settling in such a unique and diverse area.  As a teaching assistant, I work with a great team here at Franklin Sherman.  I support the students in Ms. Pisani’s classroom in meeting their instructional, physical, and social goals.  While I started my education journey teaching high school history, I have spent the last 5 years working in autistic programs in Colorado, Texas, and Pennsylvania, as my Army family and I moved across the country.  I hold a Bachelor of Arts in history and a Master of Arts in teaching.  I enjoy traveling.  I also enjoy spending time with my family, all things food related, and watching college football (preferably all three of those at one time).  While Franklin Sherman is a new school for my children and me, we couldn’t be happier to call this our home.

Positivity Project News

FSES is excited to continue the Positivity Project this school year!  Each week a new character trait is explicitly taught to our students.  While the level of depth varies by grade, the entire school learns about the same trait at the same time.  This week, students will be focusing on creativity.  Students will learn about what it means to be creative and ways in which they can build and recognize that trait in others.  By recognizing and appreciating one another’s strengths, students will also be adopting the “other people matter” mindset.

Staff members with this character strength: Mr. Ralston, Mr. Saadati, and Mrs. Alexander-Toussaint

Track Update

Mr. Nielsen and his P.E. classes are making good use of our new track.  The students enjoy having a designated place where they are able to run outside.  Thanks again to JBG Smith for their generous donation!

Thank You!

I want to thank the Franklin Sherman community for a wonderful book fair!  It would not have been possible without the help of our many volunteers.  I appreciate all of your hard work!  Thank you to all of our FSES families for supporting our library, and I wish you happy reading!

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

Beginning on October 21, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.  Returning this form is important, because information from this survey results in an anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education.  These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.  For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school.  If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 30.  All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Student art work is always part of the FSES yearbook.  Students are encouraged to design a yearbook cover illustrating what they think is important or enjoy about Franklin Sherman.  Possible ideas include: going on a field trip, subjects they really like, collecting for a service project, drawing the school or playground, etc.

Four student drawings will be chosen for the yearbook – front cover, back cover, title page, and end page.

Design requirements:

  • Drawing must be vertical
  • Use thin black markers for the drawing
  • Color in with colored pencils or thin colored markers
  • Do not use words unless included in a sign

Students may see Mrs. Gottke if they have questions or need paper.
