Dear Hughes Parents, Guardians, and Students,
We enjoyed a festive Spirit Week with a lot of participation from our students and staff. Today you will see Langston Hughes represented by the STEP team and the Robotics Club at the South Lakes Homecoming Parade. The parade starts at 5 p.m. from the Hunters Woods Shopping Center and walks along South Lakes Drive. We hope to see you there! And we wish the Seahawks good luck against McLean High School for their Varsity football game at 7:00 p.m.
Sincerely,
Aimée Monticchio

Congratulations! Your child was recognized this week at this month’s POWER Party!
“Panther POWER” recipients are on time to class, take responsibility for their actions, fix their mistakes, are welcoming to all members of the school community, come to class ready to learn, choose positive behaviors and attitudes and use kind words and actions when interacting with others.
These students have had many successes in first quarter, and we had a great time celebrating them.
Please encourage your child to keep up the great work! We love what we see! 😊

Career Day
Today our students enjoyed over 30 Career Day speakers who brought life to the world beyond our school walls into our classes. Students enjoyed hearing what the professions entail and how to navigate finding a career that matches their passions. Thank you to the speakers who gave a piece of their day to educate our students. We appreciate all of the support the community gives us to make Langston Hughes a special place to learn. A special thank you to our counselors who organized this event.

Here Comes the Bus Mobile App
As a result of the Transportation Services' strategic plan, Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has decided to pilot the Here Comes the Bus® mobile app at all FCPS locations. Know when your bus is approaching your stop! Here Comes the Bus® app is a school bus tracking app that can simplify morning and afternoon routines for parents and students by giving them real-time bus location and text or email notification alerts, helping them get to the bus stop on time. Here Comes the Bus® utilizes our GPS data and an easy to use customizable map that works on one or multiple devices, such as a tablet or smartphone. How do you get the app? ACT (Acknowledge, Care, and Tell an Adult) Program and Wellness Screening for 8th graders
On Thursday and Friday, November 7th and 8th,. our clinical support team will be introducing a county-approved wellness screening curriculum to our 8th grade students during health and PE classes The goals of this program are to educate students on the signs and symptoms of depression, to let students know what to do if they have concerns about themselves or a peer, and to connect students who may need support with resources inside and outside of our school. During the program, students will watch a video which will help students to identify signs of depression and distress in themselves and others, as well as what to do if they, or someone they know, are experiencing these symptoms. After the video, students will complete a wellness survey. A letter with more information about this program was mailed home to parents/guardians of 8th grade students . Included in this letter is an Opt-Out form. If you do not want your student to participate in the mental wellness awareness program and screening, please return the Opt-Out forms to your child’s school counselor or the main office, by Friday, October 1st. Parents of 8th grade students can see a sample preview of the video (see the Middle School Student Video) here: https://sossignsofsuicide.org/parent/watch-videos
The Youth Survey is being conducted from November 6-15, 2019:
The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The results of this survey are published each year on http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/demogrph/youthpdf.htm and are used by school officials, youth leadership classes, youth serving county agencies, and local non-profits to determine the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs offered in schools and communities. It is also used to identify changing trends and areas of need. The survey is anonymous and no individual information is reported.
The Fairfax County Youth Survey asks questions about risky behavior, mental health, physical health and safety. There are questions about behaviors related to alcohol, illegal drugs, and misuse of prescription drugs. Additional questions about depression, student stress, bullying, and harassment, and questions about personal health, including eating disorders, and obesity. Students are also asked about specific protective factors concerning health and safety.
All 8th grade students are being asked to complete the survey in their Civics class. If you wish for your child not to participate, the parent opt-out forms in English and 7 other languages can be found here.
