Lightning Tracks Vol. 3

Dear Lorton Station Families,

Wow!!  We are quickly approaching the end of the first quarter.  Our students are working very hard and our teachers are excited to share your child’s progress with you.  Please make sure that you have scheduled your first quarter parent conference with your child’s teacher. If you have not scheduled your conference, please contact your child’s teacher and we will be happy to schedule a time for you.

Have you submitted your child’s emergency care form?    Forms can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/forms

If you have not completed a form, please send it in as soon as possible.  Please remember that we need to have this information on file in case of an emergency and for all field trips.

Have a great weekend.

Ms. Jackson, Mr. Latham, and Ms. Berry

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact AID Coming Home Today!

Beginning on October 21, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. We will be sending home forms with our students today.  Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers. For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 30. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Picture Day Is Coming Friday, November 1! Volunteers Needed!

Have your child start practicing his or her best smile because Fall Picture Day is coming to Lorton Station on Friday, November 1! Order forms are in today's Wednesday Folder.

We are also looking for volunteers to assist the photographers throughout the day. Vouchers will be available for all volunteers. Please contact Office Assistant Betty Glaze at bhglaze@fcps.edu if you’d like to help.

SAVE THE DATE! Veterans Day Salute – Monday, November 11th!

We are honored to have many military families – currently active as well as veterans – in our school community. To honor them and thank them for their sacrifice and service, we have planned a very special celebration for Veterans Day on Monday, November 11th. We invite all active-duty, reserve, and veteran service personnel connected to our school community to come to school that morning to attend a program of patriotic music performed by students.  We will have our Traditional Thanksgiving Day luncheon on that day. Please check today’s Wednesday folder for more information.

School Attendance Reminders

It’s never too early to start encouraging regular school attendance. Nationwide data shows that starting in Kindergarten, missing 10% (about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read and by 6th grade, absenteeism is one of the three signs that a student may drop out of high school.

FCPS expects students to be in school and follow their assigned schedules unless their absence is excused due to:

  • Illness
  • a death in the family
  • a medical or dental appointment/ procedure
  • military event
  • or religious obligations.

“Parents should notify the school prior to, or at the start of, the school day when their child will be absent. When a student has been absent from school for any reason other than for a school sponsored activity, and the parents have not previously contacted the school, the parent must send written or electronic communication citing the reason(s) for the absence to the principal or designee no later than three days following the student’s return to school.”

  • A reminder that a notification to the school that your child will be absent does not automatically mean the absence is excused. If you call the school to report your child absent and the reason is unexcused, you will still receive an automated phone call stating that your child is absent that day.

Family Life Education Instructional Program Information

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) provides a comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for students in grades kindergarten through grade twelve.  Instruction is seen as a partnership among parents and guardians, the school, and the community in supporting the learning essential to the development of strong families, positive relationships, and a healthy community.

Parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or part of the Family Life Education program.  Students who are opted out are provided with age-appropriate, nonpunitive alternative health instruction, and every effort is made to foster respect for family choices.  If you wish to opt your child out of all or part of FLE for this school year, opt out forms were included in your child’s back-to-school/orientation packets and are available online for Elementary (K-6) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary-school-academics-k-6/elementary-family-life-education , Middle School (7-8) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/middle-school-academics-7-8/family-life-education-fle, and High School (9-12) https://www.fcps.edu/academics/high-school-academics-9-12/family-life-education-fle.  Please fill in the opt-out form and return it to your child’s school prior to Family Life Education instruction.

Detailed grade-level program descriptions are available online at Elementary (K-6) , Middle School (7-8) , and High School (9-12). FLE grade level-specific lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available for parents online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View https://fcps.blackboard.com/.  Account information is available at your local school or online at http://www.fcps.edu/is/instructionaltechnology/247help/parents.shtml.  Grade level-specific lessons are also available at the Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax (this location does not have media).  Grade level-specific lessons and media that is not streamed online are available for review at your child’s school library.  Due to copyright permissions, we are unable to stream all media online.

Program questions may be addressed at your child’s school or by contacting Instructional Services at 571-423-4550 or by contacting Elizabeth Payne, Health and Physical Education Coordinator at etpayne@fcps.edu.
