10/25 RRMS School Updates

Together we

A note from Dr. Goodloe:

Dear Rocky Run Families:

We have had a RAMtastic week at Rocky Run MS.  A few highlights:

  • We focused on Digital Citizenship this past week. RRMS staff attended the Speak Up Congressional Briefing earlier this week about technology in schools.  One of our awesome students, Jessie, spoke. See picture below.
  • Spirit Week Next week: We will celebrate the end of the first quarter with a "Spooky Spirit Week" for students and staff.  See the themes below.
  • Congratulations to Anish Paspuleti, Garv Jain, Kedar Prasad, and Tapan Sapre for their second place finish in the 2019 TJ BioCode competition earlier this month.
  • We had an outstanding turnout for our first Parent Teen book club of the year.  Our theme was identity and students and families enjoyed reading non-fiction together.
  • Our RRMS Band students will be supporting the Mighty Marching Chargers and playing at the Chantilly home football game tonight!

Message from Chantilly HS:  Promote Safety and Security at Football Games

Chantilly HS Varsity Football is having its best season in many years and crowds at home games have been growing in size. Chantilly HS encourages and appreciates it when community members share in their success by attending home games, but we have experienced some problems with younger students that come to games unattended by a parent or guardian. If your middle or elementary aged child wants to attend a football game, they are welcome to do so as long as a parents or guardian comes with them. Thanks for your help.

Employee Award Nominations are open: Has a Rocky Run MS staff member made a positive impact on your child or you?  Please consider nominating.  You can find more information here.

Upcoming Veteran's Day Events:

RRMS Breakfast on November 11:  All Veteran's and active duty military family members of RRMS students are invited for a breakfast reception at 8 AM on Monday, November 11.  Please RSVP  by November 8.  The reception will be followed by a PTA meeting.  Please join us!

Positivity Project (10/21-10/25): Integrity & Digital Citizenship

WHAT DOES INTEGRITY MEAN?

Integrity is doing the right thing when nobody is watching. People with integrity practice what they preach and maintain a consistent pattern of behavior aligned with their values. They have the courage not to follow the crowd if it means going against their beliefs. Integrity is closely aligned with the terms of honesty and authenticity. People with integrity tell the truth and have alignment in their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

This weeks lesson tied into our county-wide digital citizenship assignment that was posted in each grade level's google classroom. Please ask your child about this assignment or complete the assignment with your child if you wish.

STUDENT-PARENT SURVEY FOR FEDERAL IMPACT AID

Beginning on October 21, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid. Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education.

These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers. For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by next Wednesday, October 30. All results are CONFIDENTIAL. More information is available here

WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORTS

All parents/guardians who have registered for a SIS ParentVUE account and have a primary email address recorded in SIS ParentVUE can receive Weekly Progress Reports via email. This report provides a summary of your student(s) grades for the current quarter. To activate the Weekly Progress Reports via email:

  1. Login to your SIS ParentVUE account and verify that you have a primary email address within the system. It is listed under the “My Account” tab. If it is blank, enter the email address where you would like to receive the progress reports and click on update account.
  2. Once confirmed, parents/guardians are able to activate and select their preferences for receiving these reports within the SIS ParentVUE “My Account” tab.

Weekly progress reports for all of your middle and high school students will be included in one email. FCPS Elementary Schools do not use the SIS grade book and therefore, are not included in these reports.

For questions regarding a specific progress report or grade, please log in to your SIS ParentVUE account to find detailed grade book information. Additionally, your student’s teacher is always the best resource to answer any grade book questions that you may have.

Youth Survey

The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The results of this survey are published each year and are used by school officials, youth leadership classes, youth-serving county agencies, and local non-profits to determine the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs offered in schools and communities. It is also used to identify changing trends and areas of need. The survey is anonymous and no individual information is reported.

The survey will be given to 8th grade students during English  class between November 6-15, 2019.  You have the right to preview the survey and may deny permission for your child to participate if you desire. If a student is uncomfortable with any question on the survey, the student does not have to answer that question or may elect to discontinue the survey. Shortened  surveys have been created for students with special education needs and/or limited English proficiency to ensure that their voices can also be heard. The shortened version asks students questions regarding their experience at school, their sense of safety, and their knowledge of where to turn for help, if needed.  While it is hoped that as many students as possible will participate, you have the option of completing the opt out form if you wish.  Additional information about the survey and an opt out form can be viewed here.  If you do not wish for your child to take part in the survey, please complete the opt out form and return it to your child's school counselor no later than November 5, 2019. Please contact Shannon Campbell, our After-School Specialist at slcampbell@fcps.edu for any questions.

Makerspace Donations Needed

Our students love our library’s makerspace and the supplies we have for them to turn their ideas into reality! We are looking for some donations to replenish and add new items our makerspace. See the attached file for a list of requested items. If you have any of these items at home, we would love to include them in our makerspace for student use! Contact librarian Ms. Grover (ragrover@fcps.edu) with any questions.

Under Construction: Renovation News

  • Our beautiful new Learning Courtyard is complete.
  • The new main entrance, cafeteria addition and main office addition is under roof and walls are up.
  • Construction of the new library, electives wing, and main office addition are well underway.  The goal is to open these new spaces in April 2020.
  • We are excited to plan for the finishes and new furniture for all of our new spaces.
  • Dr. Goodloe holds regular renovation update sessions at school events such as BTSN, PTA meetings, school concerts, etc.  Sometimes they include "behind the scenes" tours.  Be sure to join her!

Air Quality:  During construction, questions about indoor air quality arise. The most recent air quality tests on  met or exceeded all standards.   The air quality inside the building is monitored at least once per month.  Please visit the Rocky Run website to review FAQs related to indoor air quality.

If you have specific questions about the renovation, please email them to Administrative Assistant, AJ Ries, ajries@fcps.edu or call the Rocky Run MS main office at 703-802-7700.

We will post updates, pictures, timelines, etc on this page on our website. This page will also be linked as a static announcement on our homepage as we move through the renovation process.
