Positivity Project: Perpsective
You appreciate when people see things in different ways. You have the ability to understand the world from multiple points of view.
Perspective is also referred to as wisdom and is distinct from intelligence. People with this strength are sought out for advice because they see the big picture and can make sense of the world’s complexity. This strength of perspective gives individuals the ability to see to the heart of difficult matters and achieve clarity. Most importantly, they are honest and behave in an ethically consistent manner.
Perspective is usually gained over time, as one accumulates more knowledge and experiences. However, developing perspective is not only a matter of time. It comes from truly listening to others when they talk and working to understand new points of view when reading books, listening to stories, or watching movies.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid
FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Student Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.
Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 30. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Edison Academy to Host Annual Apprenticeships & Skilled Workforce Career Exploration Fair November 7, 2019
Edison Academy will host an Apprenticeships and Skilled Workforce Career Fair on Thursday, November 7, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to be sponsored by Wegmans Food Markets in the Edison High School Auxiliary Gym. The fair is designed to encourage interest among high school students and recent graduates in the in-demand skilled career fields that are attainable through two-year degree programs, certifications, apprenticeships or on-the-job training.
Fairfax County high school students, recent graduates, and their parents are invited to attend this free event to meet business, education and industry leaders from Northern Virginia who offer skilled workforce employment, education, training, and apprenticeship programs.
FCPS students, parents, recent graduates, school counselors, career coaches, and others who wish to attend should register at: https://forms.gle/gFoR5t1TcRBzD38C6
Edison Academy and Edison High School are Fairfax County public schools located at 5801 Franconia Road in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. Our Wegmans Food Market sponsors are located at Hilltop Village Center in Alexandria, Fairfax, Chantilly, and other Virginia locations.
For more information about this event contact: ecwilliford@fcps.edu
Careers for skilled workers particularly in the construction-related trades, service industries, manufacturing, and information technology are growing. Many require less than two years of education to attain certifications or an Associate degree while other careers may offer employment immediately after high school graduation through apprenticeship and on-the-job training. Salaries and wages are competitive. Many employers offer opportunities to their employees for educational assistance, enabling them to rapidly advance. This event promotes these career opportunities.

PTA Direct Donation Drive
As the Weyanoke Parent Teacher Association (PTA), we believe that every child matters and we aim to enrich the educational experience of all children. Every child should have an opportunity to go on a field trip, attend assemblies, or participate in Science Night. This is why the PTA is so important!
The PTA has two major functions:
-
Communicating and Partnering with Administrators, Teachers, and other stakeholders in Fairfax County Public Schools to advocate for Weyanoke students and families.
-
Funding and/or organizing field trips, assemblies, Science Night, the Spelling Bee, and other activities to benefit the Weyanoke Community.
These programs help develop our children’s minds and reinforce the lessons they are taught by our wonderful teachers. To fund your child(ren)’s activities, the Weyanoke PTA needs to raise at least $10,000. To reach this goal, we are implementing our Annual Direct Donation Drive.
What is a Direct Donation Drive? Rather than having families purchase items where only a portion of the money goes to the PTA, a Direct Donation Drive is where we ask families to make monetary donation directly to the PTA. In past years, a student might sell a pie or wrapping paper for $20 and the PTA would only earn $4-5 to benefit the school. Through the Direct Donation Drive, however, 100% of the money goes to Weyanoke to fund field trips, assemblies and other important school activities.
Last year, we raised enough to pay for every class to go on a field trip, the Spelling Bee, Science Fair, and other activities. This was especially impressive since not all of our families participated. This year we are asking for every family to participate and reach out to additional family and friends so we can have an even more successful drive.
Talk with your children and come up with a list of people (grandma, friend next door, a pastor, an aunt) who care about the kids and can donate -- even if it’s just a small amount. If each of us were to receive just $10 from five people who we know, love, and trust, we would raise over $20,000! Just a little bit from each of us will go a long way, and we could do even more for our students, such as providing after school clubs for FREE or more field trips which the kids really enjoy and appreciate!
Donations can be sent to the school in the attached Donation Envelopes or through the Online Portal: https://squareup.com/store/weyanoke-elementary-pta
The donation drive goes from October 15 to November 15. We have given students the opportunity to earn some prizes through raffles as well as a grand prize at the end of the donation drive based on the amount and number of donations raised. The kids will be encouraged daily at school during the remainder of October and into November. All donations are tax deductible.
Thank you for your being a part of our community and supporting the school through the PTA.
