Wolf News October 24

KD 2019

A Delegation of Aspiring Principals from South Korea visited Oak Hill last Friday to learn about our school.

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

We invite you all to come join us on a world tour tonight as we travel the night across many countries all in less than an hour and a half. We cannot wait to see what our volunteers will be showcasing for each of their countries.  Please join us with your family to enjoy the cultural diversity at Oak Hill.

Unfortunately, I will miss tonight’s festivities. I have been asked by FCPS Superintendent Dr. Brabrand to attend tonight’s Schoolboard meeting to accept Dr. Brabrand’s Excellence in Equity Award based on accreditation standards. Oak Hill was in the top 10 schools to achieve the highest average increase across all reporting groups in English. We also achieved another Excellence Award for being a top 10 school to achieve the greatest reduction of the English achievement gap. We are proud of our students and all of our staff for setting high expectations in a caring environment.

Thank you to the many volunteers that have been helping with class field trips, the lunchroom, PTA events, classrooms or Field Days. Many hands make light work and we truly appreciate YOU!

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to further support your child’s learning and experience at Oak Hill.  My door is always open!

Sincerely,

Holly DeVore, Principal

Our school is celebrating Digital Citizenship Week with spirit days and activities focused on developing healthy habits around technology use.

Below is the student spirit day theme for tomorrow.

  • Friday: “Lei” Off the Tech - wear a Hawaiian lei (provided by your teacher) and take a break from screens to connect more in person.

Please see the Digital Citizenship page on our website for resources and suggested activities to help support healthy habits at home. One of the resources is a choice board for students to select an activity a day that matches the daily theme.

Tip of the Week

dice

At Oak Hill, we engage in Math Workshop every day.  Students get to explore and share strategies within a math unit.  Our workshop starts with a Number Sense Routine each day.  This is a time where the class can build a community and learn how to share strategies in a way that allows students to take risks in a safe environment.  This is also a time where teachers can support mental math and build number sense in order to support students’ foundation of concepts.  One of our favorite sense making routines is Which One Doesn’t Belong.  In this activity, students look at an image, like the one above, and share which one doesn’t belong AND a reason why.  This allows entry points for all students and stretches their thinking past one right answer.  Try one of these at home as a family to spur some great thinking!  You might challenge yourselves to come up with one of your own!

Field Day

field day

Thank you to all of our volunteers who made Oak Hill's first Field Day of year for Kindergarten through 2nd grade a big success.  We will be holding Field Day for 3rd and 4th grades on Tuesday, October 29 from 9:00-10:55am.  To volunteer please click here.  We look forward to a great day!

Chipotle Spirit Night

chipotle

Come join us at the Franklin Farm Chipotle on Tuesday, October 29th anytime between 4-8 PM. Show the cashier the flyer OR say you are supporting Oak Hill. Online orders will not be included in the fundraiser total. Chipotle will donate 33% of the proceeds to Oak Hill’s Technology funds. Have fun and help Oak Hill ES raise funds for technology at the same time!  We hope to see you there.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

Beginning on October 21, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.  The preprinted form was sent home in this week's Wednesday folder.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 30. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.  For more information about Impact Aid, please click here to watch a short video.
