Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

Beginning on October 21, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 30. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Tiger Night Thank You

Last Friday night’s Tiger Night was a huge success!  We had approximately 300 students in attendance.

We are tremendously grateful to all of the parents who volunteered, donated food, sold tickets during lunches, and chaperoned the many activities that night. Thank you for giving your support to make sure every student had an evening that was fun and safe.

We would also like to thank Mark Twain’s administrative team (Mr. Miller, Mrs. Montgomery, Mr. Fitzgerald, Ms. Nocera, and Ms. Stickler) for staying late on a Friday to make sure everything ran smoothly.  Thank you also to Mr. Foster, Ms. Lebowitz, and Mr. Helm for working late so the students could play basketball, do improvisation and sing karaoke.

Looking forward to the Spring Tiger Night in April 2020!

Chipotle Night

Mark your calendar for our next PTA Spirit Event on November 12th from 5-9 PM at the Kingstowne Chipotle.  Tell the cashier you’re supporting MTMS PTA and they will donate 33% of the proceeds.

Innerspace Science

The first meeting of Innerspace Science After School Club will be Monday, October 21 during the first block.

Do you know a student fascinated by the undersea world and the technologies for exploring it?  Innerspacescience.org is a group whose members build and operate manned submersibles, which are made available to scientists at no cost. On land, they use the subs to excite students about STEM and ocean conservation. A few weeks ago, National Public Radio featured them on their program "All Things Considered" and the piece makes a great introduction: https://www.npr.org/2019/09/02/755571204/submarine-hobbyists-help-researchers-on-montanas-flathead-lake

The organization's founder, Alec Smyth, is also on the crew of Pisces VI, a research submarine that enters service in 2020 with missions to places like Antarctica and the Indian Ocean. Alec will be offering a two month after-school program at Mark Twain, during which students will get to see a two-person sub and learn about physics, engineering, marine ecology, and marine conservation. It is the program's third year at our school and it has received great reviews from students and parents.

The cost of the program is $150, but Innerspace Science doesn't want anyone left out for economic reasons - anyone who can't afford the program can earn a scholarship by writing an essay. To register for this program or learn more about it, please email Alec Smyth at alecsmyth@gmail.com
