Assistant Principal News

We are happy to announce that Ashley Younger will be the new assistant  principal at Sunrise Valley starting on October 29.

Ms. Younger has been with FCPS for 13 years.  She currently is an assistant principal at Garfield Elementary.  She brings a wealth of leadership and elementary school experience with her from that position as well as her time at Waples Mill Elementary.  At Waples Mill, Ms. Younger was a special education teacher,  the local screening committee chair and extended school year administrator.

We are very fortunate to continue to have Ms. Pierson as interim assistant principal.  She has done an excellent job filling in and we are very thankful for all her work at Sunrise Valley.

Please read the following which is an  introductory letter from Ms. Younger.

Good afternoon, SVES!

I am excited and honored to be joining the amazing staff of Sunrise Valley Elementary!  I am looking forward to an incredible year ahead, getting to know each of you, including the Sunrise Valley students and families.  While I am eager to share my experiences and interests with you, I am most looking forward to learning about you and what makes SVES great.

As a native to the area, I was able to experience firsthand the impact we make as educators.  Early on, I knew that I wanted to become an educator with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), and only hoped to make a small difference in the lives of students, as so many educators had done for me.  I started my career in FCPS thirteen years ago as a special education teacher at Waples Mill Elementary.  During that time, I led the Local Screening Committee, served as an Extended School Year Administrator and Assistant Principal.  Over the past four years, I have continued as Assistant Principal at Garfield Elementary, leading our schoolwide initiatives that fostered the development of the whole child through Responsive Classroom practices and maintained high expectations for all students by providing differentiated curriculum to meet every child’s learning needs.

I am committed to leading and supporting Sunrise Valley’s mission to create meaningful and rigorous learning opportunities for all students where every child can reach his/her full potential, “hand in hand with the community.”  Above all else, I value a supportive and caring culture cultivated through positive and impactful relationships.  I am dedicated to developing the social and emotional wellness of students in coordination with rich academic learning experiences, in an atmosphere that promotes student risk taking, as well as a growth mindset.

In my free time, I am an avid traveler, enjoy spending time with friends, and love all things Fall.  I can be found rooting on UVA and the Redskins (although, it’s getting harder each season).  I feel fortunate that my mom remains local and we build in mini trips to Florida throughout the year to visit my dad.  I reside in Reston with my husband, Kevin, and our wild beagle, “Bailey Girl.”

Without a doubt, I am thrilled to join the Sunrise Valley family and look forward to our work together! Please know that my door is always open to you; I look forward to seeing you in two weeks!

With Excitement and Appreciation,

Ashley Younger
