Administrative Spotlight

North Springfield Families,

This week's highlight, the Morning Meeting, is an important part of the Responsive Classroom approach.  Every classroom in the school starts their day with a Morning Meeting to build classroom community.  Morning Meetings contain four key elements: Greeting, Share, Group Activity, and Morning Message.

Meetings will look and sound different in each classroom which allows all students to feel important and builds trust with their classmates and their teacher.   Morning Meeting gives students a sense of belonging, significance, and fun as it incorporates many of our Portrait of a Graduate (PoG) skills: communication, collaboration, critical and creative thinking, ethical and global citizen, and goal directed and resilient individual.

Please ask your students about their Morning Meetings along with questions about what they are doing in the different content areas.

Digital Citizenship Week

We are off to a great start with Digital Citizenship. This year we are working on developing a healthy relationship with technology. Keep filling in those Digital Citizenship Choice Boards.

  • Wednesday: Dress as your Muse - Dress up as your favorite artist, musician, author, inventor, actor/actress, scientist, etc. and focus on how you can use technology to create original works.
  • Thursday: Dress in Your Best - Wear your best or most professional clothing and focus on using high-quality media.
  • Friday: “Lei” Off the Tech - wear Hawaiian clothing and take a break from screens to connect more in person.

Thank you for helping our students become responsible digital citizens.

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

FCPS is asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.

Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.

For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 30. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

How can we as a community recognize the signs of this mental health epidemic and what resources are available?
All teens experience some amount of anxiety – it’s a normal reaction to stress. But when temporary worries or fears become pervasive and interfere with relationships, schoolwork and health, anxiety disorders are at play. This important, eye-opening documentary features student affected by anxiety, mental health professionals, and Olympic athlete and mental health advocate Michael Phelps in opening the conversation and providing hope around a topic many find difficult to discuss.
