CWES Weekly Happenings

DL

From the Principal's Desk

Dear Families,

Students now have a new opportunity to make connections and build relationships with other students their age: grade-level morning meetings! Ordinarily, students begin their days in the classroom with Responsive Classroom morning meetings, an opportunity to greet one another and come together as a community. We are excited to share that students will now have a recurring opportunity to gather in morning meetings as a grade level. On alternating Fridays, students will meet in the gym as a half-school (K-3 or 4-6) from 9:20-9:40 to introduce a school-wide focus with a picture book, led by an administrator. Then, on the following week, students will gather as a grade level in the cafeteria for a morning meeting led by our theater teacher, Ms. Talmadge. Our wonderful resource teachers, specialists and instructional assistants are supporting students during these meetings and accompanying them to their classrooms at 9:40. (Note that fifth grade’s meetings end at 9:30 to allow them to head to specials).

From October 11-24, we are exploring the theme of kindness (“cWEs CAN be KIND”). In the half-school meeting, we read the book, “What Does it Mean to be Kind?” written by Rana Di’Orio, illustrated by Stephanie Jorisch. In follow-up grade level meetings, students are preparing short skits to demonstrate an act of kindness they might see in the cafeteria, the classroom, the playground or the neighborhood. See the schedule below to learn when your child’s grade meets.

Subsequent themes will follow the same two-week cycle, and I will include future themes in News You Choose so you can promote these positive character traits at home as well.

Please reach out if you have any questions about these morning meetings, or if you have a suggestion for a future theme for the school to focus upon!

Warm regards,

Diane Leipzig (Dr. L)

Teachers may contact parents that have completed the survey to help introduce a career connection, an academic topic, or to be a judge as an authentic audience. If you have questions, please contact Andrea Warren at amwarren@fcps.edu.

Costume Closet

From Becca Wilson

CWES counselor

Happy October! At CWES we have a small “Costume Closet” for students for whom it may be a financial hardship* to purchase a costume each year. If your student would like to take a look at what we have available, please contact Becca Wilson at rawilson@fcps.edu, so that she can confidentially reach out to your child. Please keep in mind that we have limited sizes and costumes, so we may not be able to provide your child’s first choice, but we will do our best!

We do not currently have space to store additional costumes, however if you have school-appropriate costumes that you would be willing to share, feel free to email Becca Wilson the item and size, along with a picture if you would like. We will get back to you if your costume matches any student needs.

*Students must qualify for Free and Reduced lunch in order to be eligible for the costume closet.

Impact Aid Programs

Impact Aid programs and grants are designed to assist local school districts that enroll federally connected students. The grants from these programs will become a part of FCPS' general operating budget and are critical to ensuring that all children in FCPS receive an excellent education. FCPS anticipates receiving about $3,000,000 annually in Impact Aid funds. FCPS uses the Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid to identify federally connected students and to support our request for Impact Aid resources. Starting on October 21, the survey will be distributed to all FCPS families

From the Healthy Minds Blog: Tips for Choosing Media Wisely for Your Children

Many parents worry about the amount of time their children are spending on electronic devices. While time is one consideration, the content and features of media they’re using is important too. These six steps will help families discover high quality media. They’ll also help parents learn what to look for and discuss with their children before using a new app, game, or service.
