The Franklin Sherman Flash - Oct. 21

What's Happening in 1st Grade?

FSES first graders have been learning strategies for subtraction.  They read the book, Cupcake Capers, about a fox who steals cupcakes. Students acted out the story and practiced the subtraction strategy using the Origo math smart board tool.

Meet Our New Public Health Nurse, Jennifer Stanton!

Hi!  I’m Jennifer Stanton, and I’m the Public Health Nurse (PHN) for Franklin Sherman E.S.  I am also the PHN for 3 other elementary schools in the area. I’ve been working as a Public Health Nurse in Fairfax County for over a year, and I love it!  Before I was a nurse, I was an EMT in Maryland for about 4 years.  Here are some fun facts about myself: I live in Alexandria, VA; I love watching movies; and I was born on my parent’s anniversary!

Positivity Project News

FSES is excited to continue the Positivity Project this school year!  Each week a new character trait is explicitly taught to our students.  While the level of depth varies by grade, the entire school learns about the same trait at the same time.  This week, students will be focusing on perspective.  Students will learn about what it means to be open to different points of view and ways in which they can build and recognize that trait in others.  By recognizing and appreciating one another’s strengths, students will also be adopting the “other people matter” mindset.

Staff members with this character strength: Ms. Bedard

Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid

Beginning on October 21, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.  Returning this form is important, because information from this survey results in an anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education.  These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.  For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school.  If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in section 3.  All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 30.  All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Design Contest for the Franklin Sherman Yearbook

Due Friday, November 8

Student art work is always part of the FSES yearbook.  Students are encouraged to design a yearbook cover illustrating what they think is important or enjoy about Franklin Sherman.  Possible ideas include: going on a field trip, subjects they really like, collecting for a service project, drawing the school or playground, etc.

Four student drawings will be chosen for the yearbook – front cover, back cover, title page, and end page.

Design requirements:

  • Use plain white 8 ½ by 11 inch drawing or copy paper
  • Drawing must be vertical
  • Use thin black markers for the drawing
  • Color in with colored pencils or thin colored markers
  • Do not use words unless included in a sign

Students may see Mrs. Gottke if they have questions or need paper.

There are three ways you can help make this event a success!

  1. Sponsorship - Be a sponsor or find a sponsor.  Ask your company or one of your service providers to sponsor this race. Their company logos will be put on the back of the t-shirt.  All sponsorship dollars go directly to the school.  Here’s a link to the sponsorship information and contract.
  2. Sign up for the race - Grab your running shoes and your costumes and get ready for a great community event that supports our school.  Can’t make it on Oct. 27?  Register anyway and get a t-shirt for your FSES student to wear to spirit day on Thursday, October 31!  Sign up today for the 5K or the 1 mile Fun Run.
  3. Volunteer - Running not your thing, but still want to help?  There are many race day volunteer opportunities that will help us make this a safe and fun event, and we need many race marshals along the course to support our runners.  Click here to sign up.
