Thank you, Fairview Community!
Mr. Theo J. Neilly, Minister Counselor/Consul General from The Embassy Consular Annex of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, visited Fairview today to thank students for donating almost 700 toothbrushes to hurricane victims in the Bahamas. We will share information about the workshop model, and then provide you with an opportunity to experience "guided practice" of primary and upper grade skills with our staff.

Digital Citizenship Week
October 21-25, 2019
This year’s theme is Media Balance and Well-Being: Developing a Healthy Relationship with Your Technology. Our school is celebrating Digital Citizenship Week with spirit days and activities focused on developing healthy habits around technology use. Students will bring home a choice board to select at least one activity a day that matches the daily theme. Participation is voluntary. Below you’ll find the schedule of spirit days along with resources and suggested activities to help support healthy habits at home too.
Spirit Days for Next Week

Monday: Hat Day - Put on your thinking cap and reflect on your media use and habits.

Tuesday: Active Wear - Exercise your healthy tech habits.

Wednesday: Dress as your Muse - Dress up as your favorite artist, musician, author, inventor, actor/actress, scientist, etc. and focus on how you can use technology to create original works.

Thursday: Dress in Your Best - Wear your best or most professional clothing and focus on using high-quality.

Friday: “Lei” Off the Tech - wear Hawaiian clothing and take a break from screens to connect more in person.
Resources and Activities for Home
Monday: Reflect on your relationship with technology and begin to think of ways to make some healthy adjustments.
Tuesday: Exercise healthy tech practices such as managing notification settings and turning off screens an hour before bedtime. Try some of these ideas:
- Make phone-free zones in your home.
- Promote better sleep by disconnecting from screens at least one hour before bedtime and charging your phone outside of the bedroom.
Wednesday: Think about how technology can be used to create original works. Try this idea:
- Experiment with computer coding at home. Code.org has activities that teach students to use coding to design games, apps, drawings, and websites.
Thursday: Think about the media your family consumes and select high quality, age-appropriate resources:
- Discuss these 5 questions with your family when you consume media together, including books, movies, and news articles.
Friday: Practice media balance by taking a break from screens to engage in real-world experiences and quality time:

STUDENT-PARENT SURVEY
FOR FEDERAL IMPACT AID
Beginning on October 21, FCPS will be asking all families to fill out a Student-Parent Survey for Federal Impact Aid.
Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an additional $3 million in grants each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by October 30. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

Youngest or Only
We are ready to use the Youngest or Only list, therefore information coming home in Wednesday Folders to all families will be sent home via the youngest or only in each family.
Family Life Education (FLE) Preview Night
October 28, 6:00-7:00 p.m.
You are invited to attend an evening preview of the Family Life Education media and lessons and to talk with school staff about the program. The meeting will be held on Monday, October 28, 2019, from 6:00 – 7:00 pm at Fairview Elementary School in the cafeteria. Parents can enter through Door 2. All program materials and media for all grade levels will be available for your review at this time.
