1. Parent Volunteers Needed
Don’t miss out on this opportunity to volunteer with the kids! On October 21st and 22nd, Woodson will be conducting student vision and hearing screenings. The school health aide, Ms. Christina Lugo, is looking for a few parent volunteers to help.

2. Portrait and School Pic Make-ups
Underclassmen: Make-up pictures will be taken on Tuesday, October 22nd in the Dance Studio.
Seniors: Make-up portraits will be taken October 21st-28th. Call LifeTouch at 800-445-1189. Be sure to make an appointment to get your picture taken. There is no charge to sit for your portrait and get your picture in the yearbook!
3. Federal Impact Aid Forms
On Tuesday, October 22nd during 7th Period, Woodson will be sending home a Federal Impact Aid form with each student. Please ask your teen for this form on Tuesday after school. Please complete the form promptly and have your teen return it to their 7th Period teacher. FCPS requires 100% participation for this program.
Returning this form is important because information from this survey results in an anticipated $3 million dollars in grant funds each year from the U.S. Department of Education. These funds are used to support all Fairfax County public schools and centers.
For each school-aged child in your household, please complete, sign, date, and return the survey to your child's school. If sections 1 and 2 of the survey do not apply to you, just check the box in Section 3 and sign the form. All forms must be signed, dated, and returned by Friday, November 1, 2019. All results are CONFIDENTIAL.

4. Governor's School
The application process for the 2020 Summer Residential Governor’s Schools has begun.
The Summer Residential Governor’s Schools program is open to current high school sophomores and juniors and provides students with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts; humanities; mathematics, science, and technology; or through mentorships in marine science, medicine and health sciences, or engineering.
STUDENTS must indicate interest by completing the interest form no later than Tuesday, November 5th in order to be considered:

There will be an interest meeting on Wednesday, October 23rd at 3:00 p.m. in Cav Hall for students. Students, if you are interested in applying to Governor’s School, please plan to attend the meeting.

5. Administrative Change at Woodson
As of November 1, 2019, Dr. Disalvo will be taking an interim position as the Director of Student Services at another high school for approximately 6 months. This is an incredible growth opportunity for her. We will miss her, wish her all the best and will look forward to having her back! There will be further communication around who will fill Dr. Disalvo's role as she is our 10th grade administrator. Congratulations Dr. Disalvo!
6. Parents as Partners - Session 2
October’s Parents as Partners seminar will address Wellness and will take place on Wednesday, October 23rd at 5:30 p.m. in Cafeteria A.
Based on the 2018 Fairfax County Youth Survey, there are many assets which assist in positive student well- being. The parent seminar will feature Dr. DiSalvo, Assistant Principal, Dr. Floyd, Principal, Ms. Parker, counselor and a panel of students to review strategies to help your child balance the demands of high school. More information will be posted on our website with materials posted after the session for those that are not able to attend.
We will begin our session by exploring this recent article that was in The Washington Post on September 26th written by Jennifer Breheny Wallace.

7. Resources Night
On Wednesday, October 23rd at 7:00 p.m. in Cav Hall, join us for Resources Night. Learn about tools and online resources which will help you navigate opportunities for your high school student.
Resources discussed will include SIS, ParentVUE, Naviance Student, library resources, and much more. These resources will assist you in finding everything from your student’s grades to paid internships, free special programs, and scholarships.
This is a fast-paced evening that covers a lot of information. Bring a note pad or smart device to take notes and follow along.
Although we invite all of our freshmen parents to this event, everyone is welcome - especially anyone who has not attended in previous years.

This art exhibition recognizes the creativity and technical expertise of FCPS art teachers. The exhibition runs through October 26th at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton.
8. AP Test Opt Out Forms
This is a reminder that AP Exam Opt-Out forms are due no later than Friday, October 25th. Timely submission of the Opt-Out form indicating which AP exam(s) a student does not wish to take is necessary for the student to avoid fees. AP Exam registration cannot be updated or changed past October 25.
The College Board is assessing a $40 fee to students who are registered for the AP exam but do not sit for the AP exam. Students will be charged the College Board’s $40 fee if they decide not to take an AP exam(s) and did not submit an Opt-Out form by October 25, or if a student drops an AP course after the Opt-Out deadline of October 25.
AP Opt Out forms were mailed home the first week of October. Please contact Student Services at 703-503-4623 if you did not receive an opt out form or if you have any questions.
9. Military Appreciation Varsity Football Game
Friday, October 25th at 7:00 p.m Woodson will pay tribute to the brave men and women of the Armed Forces during its varsity football game versus the West Springfield Spartans, at Pat Cunningham Stadium.
All current and former military members with an ID are encouraged to attend, and will receive free general admission. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. with a cook out for our Military Families prior to the game at 5:30 p.m. The Coast Guard will provide a static boat for kids of all ages to explore and the Army will have fun activities such as a basketball. We will have Woodson High School Military Appreciation shirts for families to purchase for $10 as well.
It is a “Camo Out” so wear your Camouflage in support of all military men and women who have served and continue to serve our Country! #CAVSTRONG! #oneWoodson!

10. Woodson Fall Festival
The Woodson SGA Leadership class is hosting their annual Fall Fest, a fun day for kids of all ages, on Saturday, October 26th from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., and will be located on the Woodson outdoor basketball courts, outside door 7 on the side of the school. (In case of inclement weather, Fall Fest will be held in the Auxiliary Gym).
There will be Halloween themed games and crafts such as pumpkin painting, a moon bounce, candy, and much more! Be sure to wear your best costume!

11. FAFSA Line-by-Line Info Session
On Tuesday, October 29th at 7:00 p.m. in Cavalier Hall, Woodson is hosting a line-by-line information session for parents on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. This is the form used to apply for financial aid for college or graduate school.

 12. Fall Production: Letters to Sala
Woodson Drama's fall play, Letters to Sala will run on the weekends starting Monday, November 1st through Saturday, November 9th.
Adapted from the book Sala’s Gift by Ann Kirschner and based on a true account, Letters to Sala is a remarkable story of a young girl's survival during wartime Germany. Five years. Seven Nazi labor camps. Over 350 hidden letters. Sala Garncarz Kirschner kept her secret for over fifty years, concealing her incredibly painful history in a Spill and Spell box. Everything changes when Sala reveals the cache to her grown daughter, Ann.

13. Expunge a Course
In accordance with Virginia state regulations, FCPS Regulation 2408 permits parents of students who take a high school credit-bearing course in middle school to request that the grade be omitted from the student’s high school transcript and the student not earn high school credit for the course. Parents interested in expunging a course and removing the middle school course and associated credit from the high school transcript must make this request no later than the end of the first nine weeks of the school year following completion of the course.
For current ninth graders, the deadline to complete the expunge request is Friday, November 1st.

14. FCPS College Fair and College Night Programs
Fairfax County Public Schools high school students and their families are encouraged to attend the 2019 College Fair on Sunday, October 20, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., at Fair Oaks Mall, and College Night on Monday, October 21, 7 to 9 p.m., at Hayfield Secondary School. Both events provide opportunities for college-bound students and their families to gather information from a variety of schools.
Approximately 300 colleges and universities are represented, including two- and four-year colleges, international colleges, and military academies. Additionally, College Night features workshops related to the college admissions process, standardized testing, and financial aid.
Interpreters will be available during College Night, but these services must be requested in advance by contacting Susie Statham at sstatham@fcps.edu or at 571-423-4429. Students are highly encouraged to register in advance for these events. Upon registration, each student will receive a unique bar code, which will allow colleges to scan the student’s information instead of having to fill out an information card for each college or university.

16. Car Wash Cancelled
The boys lacrosse car wash originally scheduled for this Saturday, October 19th has been cancelled. A reschedule date will be announced soon.
17. Thank you from Region 5 - Hurricane Relief
Dear Region 5 Communities,
Thank you for coming together to support the Bahamas after Dorian’s deadly destruction over a month ago. We were able to raise $8,650 to help support the area. All donations from the GoFundMe page are now being delivered to the UNICEF organization.
