Parents as Partners - Session 2

In response to the Family Engagement Survey administered during the 2018-19 School Year, Woodson is focusing on sharing information with parents to help parents improve their child’s learning and to identify and develop social and emotional skills for students to be successful.  In addition, we are looking for ways to maintain two way communication between families and the school.

One way we are engaging families is through monthly parent seminars.  In addition to the PTSO meetings (held on the second Tuesday of each month), administrators and counselors will plan and deliver a monthly seminar based on various topics.

October’s Parents as Partners seminar will address Wellness and will take place on Wednesday, October 23rd at 5:30 p.m. in Cafeteria A.

Based on the 2018 Fairfax County Youth Survey, there are many assets which assist in positive student well- being.  The parent seminar will feature Dr. DiSalvo, Assistant Principal, Dr. Floyd, Principal, Ms. Parker, counselor and a panel of students to review strategies to help your child balance the demands of high school.   More information will be posted on our website with materials posted after the session for those that are not able to attend.

We will begin our session by exploring this recent article that was in The Washington Post on September 26th written by Jennifer Breheny Wallace.

Fall Sports Highlights

The Lady Cavs Varsity field hockey team travelled to the Robinson Rams.  Seniors Anna Stribling and Bridget Cassata kept the ball moving from the defense through the midfield.  On the attack, Senior Anabel Heisley was a constant threat in attack.  At halftime though the two teams remained at an impasse.  Woodson demonstrated great team play, a state that has become a hallmark of the 2019 season.  Significant contributors included Allie Maahs and Zoe Hite.  However, the scoring account remained unopened.  This changed as the game entered overtime.  Rams made an attack, but the Lady Cavs defense held strong.  Cassata emerged with the ball and found Stephan making a run and connected the pass.  Senior Izzy Gonzales attacked in unison creating a passing option on which Stephan capitalized.  Gonzales returned the ball to Stephan forcing the Robinson defenders to adjust.  As they shifted, Stephan passed back to Gonzales for the shot, goal, and win.  Final score, 1-0.  Cavs win.

This week was a great week to be a Cavalier for our Volleyball team! Our ladies went 3-0 against James Madison last Monday. Hitter Katie Burruss was back in the game after an injury and right away racked up some kills for the Cavs as did Middle Simone Barry. Thank you to everyone who came out for Dig Pink on Thursday for our game against Lake Braddock! It was a “Pink Out” night with delicious baked goods, great raffle prizes and a successful fundraiser for breast cancer research through The Side Out Foundation. After a tough loss to LBSS last month the Cavs were hungry for a win. With the excitement and hype of Dig Pink, great attitude and super effort, our ladies did just that with another 3-0 win! Jordan Lyons and Amy Burkhardt continued to perform strong, hustling in defense and hitting hard for kills from the back and front row. Maggie Cox brought her strong serves to the game and Olivia Guerra and Maja Zuber stopped the Bruins hits with six blocks each for the night. It took every girl playing her part in every position to make this strong win happen. We are now 17-4 overall and 4-3 in the district. Way to go Lady Cavs! Tuesday, Oct 15 is an away game at West Springfield (7:15pm). Please come out to Woodson on Thursday, Oct. 17 to celebrate our seniors for our Senior Night. Let’s cheer our ladies on for a win against Robinson. This should be a very exciting game! Bring your spirit and let’s fill the house!
