Dear Family Fairfax,
It is hard to believe it is October, and I already have heat going in my little office! I know, for some it still isn’t cool enough, but I tend to prefer warmer temperatures, so I turn the heat up early on in the season.
Our students are about to celebrate their first three-day weekend since Labor Day while our teachers are given some professional time to collaborate around their curriculum. Everyone is looking a little tired, and with our PSAT coming up next week, I hope that many of our students find time to rest and relax. As for our seniors, many are deep into the college-application process, and it shows, so I hope that they find a little time to break away and just enjoy themselves. Perhaps a little encouragement from all of us would help! Sometimes we all get lost in the many mounting (sometimes menial) tasks that are so urgent, we forget to take time for the important. I wish you a weekend of the important.
Our Golf team will head to Richmond on Sunday to prepare for States! We wish them luck (but they really have mad SKILLS), and I hope to be tweeting out the results as soon as they become available. Our Field Hockey team will have Senior Night on Monday, and our cheerleaders will be at Regionals on Wednesday. Last night, I got to see them perform in a scrimmage of sorts, and they were dynamite. I know they will make us proud next week as well!
Speaking of pride, I recently had two of our students present an idea for an innovative student app, one in which they have now formed an LLC. Where did the concept of the app originate, you might wonder? It was the product of an assignment from one of our English classes at Fairfax. Students were challenged with “fixing a problem,” and they came up with the idea for an app that allows for student collaboration and resource sharing, even creating a prototype. Not only was I impressed with their presentation skills, foresight, and insight into student needs, but I found myself so proud to be at Fairfax where students are doing and creating in ways that I know I never dreamed. I hope we continue to build a school where students aren’t afraid to dream.
Another proud moment for Fairfax High School was last Wednesday when we celebrated a renaissance of sorts: The return of the Latino Partnership for Student Success. I fumbled through an opening in Spanish (even after lots of practice), and Dr. Scott Brabrand delivered a powerful speech on the importance of our shared commitment and partnership between the school and home. I was moved by the many stories of success that were also shared—it was a night filled with fellowship, and I was so proud to see the Latino culture permeating our cafeteria and hallways in dance, music, and, as I ended in my previous paragraph, a school where students aren’t afraid to dream.

PSAT Day Testing:
On Wednesday, October 16, 2019 the PSAT (for all 10th and 11th graders) will be administered between 8:10AM and 12:55PM at FHS.
- Seniors do not have classes on October 16, 2019.
- All 10th and 11th graders will participate in PSAT testing and receive a free score report provided by FCPS. Students must bring with them several #2 pencils and their own calculator.
- All 11th graders who participate in PSAT testing will be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship.
- All 9th grade students will participate in Academic and Career Plans on October 16, 2019.
AP Class Testing Information:
AP Test Opt-Out letters were mailed home on October 2, 2019. Please check your mail for your opt-out letter. Students have until October 25, 2019 at 3PM to return the opt-out form. The forms should be returned to Mrs. KZ in L127. No late forms will be accepted.
Developing Digital Citizenship
As Fairfax High School begins the journey of developing Digital Citizens. Jason Smolinski, John King, and Tim Brown have put together some questions they would like to get answered. Please take a few minutes to answer as many of these questions that you feel would help us enhance what you are teaching at home. Virginia Summer Residential Governor's School
The Virginia Summer Residential Governor’s School is an enriching program designed for highly motivated 10th and 11th grade students who are looking for a challenging summer experience. It provides students with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts; humanities; mathematics, science, and technology; or through mentorships in marine science, medicine and health sciences, or engineering.
The selection process is extremely competitive and limited. Consideration is given to students’ academic records, test scores, extra-curricular activities, honors, and awards, creativity, original essays, and teacher recommendations. Students applying for the Visual and Performing Arts Summer Residential Governor’s School participate in a statewide adjudication where they audition or present portfolios for review before a pair of professionals in the specific arts field. These residential programs run from late June to late July.
Each Summer Residential Governor’s School focuses on one special area of interest. Students live on a college or university campus for up to four weeks each summer. During this time, students are involved in classroom and laboratory work, field studies, research, individual and group projects and performances, and seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals. In the three mentorships, students are selected to work side-by-side with research scientists, physicians, and a variety of other professionals. A director and a student-life staff provide supervision of students 24 hours a day, throughout the program.
There will be an interest meeting Thursday, October 17th during Lion Time 9:45 – 10:30 in the Multipurpose Room for all interested 10th and 11th grade students.
