A note from Dr. Goodloe:
Dear Rocky Run Families:
We have had a RAMtastic week at Rocky Run MS. A few highlights:
- All student teams engaged in Positivity Project team assemblies focused on the Other People Matter Mindset. We participated in team building activities and make connections with one another with a focus on Being Present.
- Our student leadership development class created this video to highlight the good things happening around our building. Thank you to Mr. Quinn and Mr. Mondres for their support of this project.
- Several RRMS students shared their knowledge of technology tools as they partnered with Mrs. Galietta, School Based Technology Specialist, to share classroom applications during professional development for teachers. What an awesome example of the impact of student voice on teaching and learning.
- We recognized our September Students of the Month on each team (list included below).
- Thank you to Ms. Laura Riccardi, School Counselor, who finished her time as a long term sub for School Counselor, Esther Bae. Ms. R. has made a tremendous positive impact and we wish her well as she moves on the Key MS.
Parent Survey: Please Share With Us! LAST CALL!
One of our school priorities this school year is to further our community engagement in student learning. To help us with this work, we ask that you please complete this survey to share information with our staff on how we can best partner with you to support your student.

Positivity Project (10/7 - 10/11) Being Present and Giving Others My Attention
WHAT DOES BEING PRESENT MEAN?
Just like plants need sunlight to grow, our relationships need attention. The research is crystal clear, relationships are the cornerstone of health, happiness, and resilience. And, if we don’t give our attention to the people we’re building relationships with – whether family members, close friends, or even distant colleagues – we can’t build those relationships.
On a group level, it’s vitally important that we pick our heads up from our cell phones and truly listen to other people when they’re talking. A positive culture is built with positive relationships – and we can’t build positive relationships without attention. So, the answer is clear: we need to pay attention to people in our lives. That’s going to be good for individuals, small groups, and large societies.
Check out this video that our students viewed this week about being present with others.

October 10th: World Mental Health Day
World Mental Health Day was Thursday, October 10. Each year, the World Health Organization promotes this day as an opportunity to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world. This year’s theme is Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention. Every 40 seconds, someone loses their life to suicide. Let’s put those 40 seconds into action and raise awareness!
School counselors are excited to share our mental health resource site for our Chantilly community. As elementary, middle, and high school counselors continue to work with families in each school, we feel it is necessary to share similar information and resources with everyone in grades K-12: Chantilly Pyramid’s comprehensive Google site.
We also have a second site specifically for students located on their school’s grade level Google Classroom site under School Counseling Resources. It is viewable when students are logged on to their FCPS accounts.
Feel free to access both sites on your own. If you have specific questions or needs, contact your child’s school counselor directly.
Youth Survey
The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The results of this survey are published each year and are used by school officials, youth leadership classes, youth-serving county agencies, and local non-profits to determine the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs offered in schools and communities. It is also used to identify changing trends and areas of need. The survey is anonymous and no individual information is reported.
The survey will be given to 8th grade students during English class between November 6-15, 2019. You have the right to preview the survey and may deny permission for your child to participate if you desire. If a student is uncomfortable with any question on the survey, the student does not have to answer that question or may elect to discontinue the survey. Shortened surveys have been created for students with special education needs and/or limited English proficiency to ensure that their voices can also be heard. The shortened version asks students questions regarding their experience at school, their sense of safety, and their knowledge of where to turn for help, if needed. While it is hoped that as many students as possible will participate, you have the option of completing the opt out form if you wish. Additional information about the survey and an opt out form can be viewed here. If you do not wish for your child to take part in the survey, please complete the opt out form and return it to your child's school counselor no later than November 5, 2019. Please contact Shannon Campbell, our After-School Specialist at slcampbell@fcps.edu for any questions.
Credit Exam for World Languages
The exam is designed to assess students’ native language proficiency and enable them to earn one or two credits toward fulfilling the world languages requirement for the Advanced Studies Diploma.
The 2019 Credit Exam for World Languages will be administered November 6th, 7th and 8th.
Registration opens Monday, September 9 and closes on Thursday, October 10 at 4 PM. Students must meet with their school counselors to register. Late registrations will not be accepted.

Makerspace Donations Needed
Our students love our library’s makerspace and the supplies we have for them to turn their ideas into reality! We are looking for some donations to replenish and add new items our makerspace. See the attached file for a list of requested items. If you have any of these items at home, we would love to include them in our makerspace for student use! Contact librarian Ms. Grover (ragrover@fcps.edu) with any questions.
