AN ESSENTIAL PRESENTATION FOR STUDENTS AND PARENTS

Wednesday, October 16th 6:40 p.m. - 8 p.m. (after short PTA Mtg)
Longfellow Lecture Hall
Please join us for an engaging evening for parents and students as Ann Dolin, local author and tutoring expert presents: Habits for Middle & High School Success: Strategies for Organization, Focus, Motivation, and most importantly...Communication. Don't miss this opportunity for your students to hear with you how they can take their study skills to the next level and improve their executive function skills. Ann Dolin is the founder of Educational Connections, and is a former Fairfax County, VA public school teacher with over 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience. After leaving FCPS in 1998, Ann founded Educational Connections as its only employee with the goal of providing individualized one-to-one instruction based on each student’s learning style. Today, her company employs over 200 tutors, serves the entire metropolitan D.C. area, and has worked with over 8,000 students.
Ann's engaging presentation will cover:
• Essential study habits to help kids plan ahead and stay on top of an increased workload.
• The Organizational Arsenal: Tools and strategies to keep kids on track.
• Using powerful questions to spark motivation and open the lines of communication.
• Practical ways to prepare for block scheduling and tame procrastination.

REFLECTIONS - CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

For 50 years, National PTA’s Reflections program has helped students explore their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, develop artistic literacy, increase confidence and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life. This year's theme is “LOOK WITHIN”. Students can create theme-based artwork in dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography or visual arts.
Submission guidelines and entry forms can be found here. Entry forms will also be available at the front office.
Submissions will be accepted now through Friday, October 18th, 2019. Submissions will be collected in the bins labeled "Reflections" at the front office.
Specific entry rules can be found at the bottom of the Virginia PTA - Reflection page: https://vapta.org/programs/arts-and-education/reflections-top

CHINA EXCHANGE PROGRAM

Applications are now open for students to host and/or travel to China in 2020 as part of our very first China Exchange Program at Longfellow Middle School!
We will be welcoming 15-20 students from our partner school in China, from Friday, January 31st to Friday, February 7th, 2020. They will be hosted by Longfellow students and immersed in classes during the week with all programming to be coordinated by our trusted third party Alpha Exchange. For each student hosted, families will receive a $200 stipend or $500 credit towards the China trip during Spring Vacation. The trip will run from Wednesday, April 1st to Saturday, April 11th and cost $3,200 per student ($2,700 or $2,400 for students that hosted 1-2 students). We will visit our partner school and homestay with the Chinese exchange students in Yichang and enjoy 3 days of sightseeing in Beijing, including visits to the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall of China.

Contact Ms. Madeline Coyne for more information and signup at this link by 25 October 2019.

FAIRFAX COUNTY YOUTH SURVEY

The Fairfax County School Board and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors work together to administer the Fairfax County Youth Survey. The results of this survey are published each year on https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/health-humanservices/fairfax-county-youth-survey and are used by school officials, youth leadership classes, youth-serving county agencies, and local non-profits to determine the effectiveness of prevention and intervention programs offered in schools and communities. It is also used to identify changing trends and areas of need. The survey is anonymous and no individual information is reported. The survey will be given to middle school students during Social Studies class and high school students during English class.

The Fairfax County Youth Survey asks questions about risky behavior, mental health, physical health, and safety. There are questions about behaviors related to alcohol, illegal drugs, or misuse of prescription drugs. Additional questions about depression, student stress, bullying and harassment, and questions about personal health, and for students in eighth, tenth, and twelfth grade only, sexual behavior, will be included in the survey. Students are also asked about specific protective factors concerning health and safety.

You have the right to preview the survey and may deny permission for your child to participate if you desire. If a student is uncomfortable with any question on the survey, the student does not have to answer that question or may elect to discontinue the survey. While it is hoped that as many students as possible will participate, you have the option of completing the opt-out form if you wish to opt out your child.

The survey will be administered between November 6-15, 2019. A copy of the survey is available to parents and/or guardians online at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/youthsurvey and in the school counseling office of your child's school.

If you do NOT wish for your child to take part in the survey, please print and complete the appropriate opt-out form at the link above and return it to your child's school counselor no later than November 5, 2019.

MCLEAN HS VARSITY FOOTBALL GAMES

All middle schoolers must be accompanied by an adult to McLean High School Varsity Football games. Once at the game, parents are responsible for the supervision of their children. For the remainder of the season, children not accompanied by an adult will not be permitted to enter the stadium. We want to encourage Longfellow students to continue to attend our games, but due to the large crowds this season, these policies are necessary to ensure the safety of everyone in attendance.
