The Franklin Sherman Flash - Oct. 14

What's Happening in STEM?

FSES third graders have been learning how vertical farming differs from conventional farming and that gardening indoors can produce the same yummy and nutritious fruits and veggies.  Two weeks ago, the students planted seedlings that they recently transferred into the tower garden.  Some of the veggies and herbs they planted include broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, lettuce, thyme, cilantro, and basil.  The students are excited to harvest their plants in a few short weeks.

Franklin Sherman students had a wonderful time celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month which honors the rich history, culture, and many contributions of Hispano-Americans.  The students experienced Hispanic culture through different and engaging activities.  All grade levels watched videos about the importance of learning the Spanish language and its advantages. Kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students learned facts, colored flags, and created maps for several Latin American countries. They also watched videos about prominent Hispanic Americans. They even danced the Mambo while enjoying the music from the King of Mambo, Tito Puente!  Sixth, fifth, and fourth grade students created presentations about their ancestors, family traditions, and the meaning of their names.  All students ended Hispanic Heritage Month learning about Christopher Columbus and his legacy.

Meet Our New Social Worker, Lisa Hershaft!

Greetings Franklin Sherman Families!

My name is Lisa Hershaft, and I am the school social worker at Franklin Sherman E.S. this year.  This is my second year with FCPS.  As the school social worker, I assist our school in supporting our students’ mental health, behavior, and social skills development.  In addition, I connect families with resources within FCPS, as well as the surrounding community.

I am a graduate from the University of Wisconsin with a Master’s in Social Work (Children/Families and School Social Work Certification).  I have worked in the fields of child welfare and private counseling for children/teens, and I have provided parenting support for at-risk families.  Prior to becoming a social worker, I taught general music for ten years in both the public and private school settings.  I enjoy infusing music, art, and other expressive therapies within groups and the individual work I do with students.  I look forward to working with our families this year at Franklin Sherman!  Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or resource needs you may have.

Positivity Project News

FSES is excited to continue the Positivity Project this school year!  Each week a new character trait is explicitly taught to our students.  While the level of depth varies by grade, the entire school learns about the same trait at the same time.  This week, students will be focusing on integrity.  Students will learn about what it means be honest and ways in which they can build and recognize that trait in others.  By recognizing and appreciating one another’s strengths, students will also be adopting the “other people matter” mindset.

Staff members with this character strength: Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Ward, Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Bello, and Mr. Barton

Are You Using Technology or is Technology Using You?

"LIKE”, An IndieFlix Original Documentary

Tuesday, October 15, 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the McLean High School Auditorium

Technology is here to stay, and social media is a place to connect, share, and express our feelings. It is also a place of self-comparison, constant fear of missing out, and a way to channel our addictive tendencies which can be harmful for mental health. What’s going on behind the screens? While we are more connected than ever, it’s hard to know if technology is helping us or hurting us, yet we do have a choice when it comes to managing the way we use technology.

As part of a year long focus on social media wellness, the Safe Community Coalition, in conjunction with the PTSAs of Langley High School and McLean High School, invites you to a free community showing of the compelling new IndieFlix Original Documentary “LIKE” ― Thursday, October 10, in the Langley High School auditorium and Tuesday, October 15, in the McLean High School auditorium. Both showings are from 7:00-8:30 p.m. “LIKE” explores the social impact of social media on our lives and the effects of technology on the brain. The goal of the film is to educate, inspire, and equip us to self-regulate. After the film, a discussion will be led by Dr. Cliff Sussman, a D.C. based psychiatrist and expert on helping people achieve a more balanced relationship with digital technology.

This event is free and recommended for adults and students of any age who have phones.

Monster Mash Dash 5K & Fun Run

mmd

Franklin Sherman Elementary PTA and Potomac River Running are teaming up again this year for the 7th Annual Monster Mash Dash 5K & Fun Run on Sunday, October 27, at 8:00 a.m.

There are three ways you can help make this event a success!

  1. Sponsorship - Be a sponsor or find a sponsor.  Ask your company or one of your service providers to sponsor this race. Their company logos will be put on the back of the t-shirt.  All sponsorship dollars go directly to the school.  Here’s a link to the sponsorship information and contract.
  2. Sign up for the race - Grab your running shoes and your costumes and get ready for a great community event that supports our school.  Can’t make it on Oct. 27?  Register anyway and get a t-shirt for your FSES student to wear to spirit day on Thursday, October 31!  Sign up today for the 5K or the 1 mile Fun Run.
  3. Volunteer - Running not your thing, but still want to help?  There are many race day volunteer opportunities that will help us make this a safe and fun event, and we need many race marshals along the course to support our runners.  Click here to sign up.
