Principals’ Message

Good evening, Lane parents and guardians,

We would like to start this week’s Principals’ Message with a huge “Thank You!” to all of the parents and families who supported our many events these past couple of weeks. Last week we had a PTA meeting that was very well attended, a Parent Café hosted by our parent liaisons, a Principal’s Coffee where parents got to practice a morning meeting and learn more about Responsive Classroom, and PTA Beautification Day, which drew more than 130 volunteers to help clean up our school grounds. And that was all outside the classroom. What a week!

This week, we have two special events during the school day: yesterday was Fall Picture Day and this Friday is Field Day, a favorite annual event that celebrates fitness, fun, and teamwork. Another big “Thank You!” to all the parents who stepped up to volunteer for both of these events.

Finally, we would like to remind everyone that next Monday, October 14th, is a Teacher Work Day, and students have the day off. The office and SACC will be open regular hours.

Have a wonderful long weekend, and enjoy the fall weather at last!

Christine Prahl, Principal
Nikki Steptoe-Coleman, Assistant Principal

Principal's Coffee

Thank you to the parents who came to our first Principal's Coffee last Friday! It was a pleasure holding a Morning Meeting with you and discussing Responsive Classroom. Thanks also to fourth grade teacher Whitney Dierman and sixth grade teacher Stacy Shick for facilitating the Morning Meeting. The next Principal's Coffee will be Friday, December 6th.

News & Notes

Lane Needs a New Cafeteria Hostess! Could It Be You?

We are in need of a host/hostess for our cafeteria beginning Monday, October 14th. The job is 2¾ hours a day (10:45 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.), Monday through Friday. Duties include monitoring students, assisting them as they clean up, and interacting with them in a positive way to assist them with their social skills. We are looking for someone who can be patient, caring, structured, and fair. If you are interested, please contact Cindy Webber at 703-924-7700 or CMWebber@fcps.edu.

Field Day is THIS FRIDAY, October 11th!

Field Day is a schoolwide event, sponsored by the P. E. Department, that allows students to participate and compete in a variety of games and activities with their class. We will be hosting our Field Day this year this Friday, October 11th. Students in grades 3 through 6 will have their Field Day in the morning; kindergarten through second grade, multiage classes, and multiability classes will have theirs in the afternoon. Please make sure your child wears his or her grade-level color:

  • Kindergarten - pink/gray
  • 1st - red
  • 2nd - orange
  • MA - light blue
  • 3rd - yellow
  • 4th - purple/white
  • 5th - dark blue
  • 6th - green.

Clothing should also be weather-appropriate that’s comfortable to move in, and don't forget the sneakers! Students without proper shoes will not be allowed to participate.

Please be sure your child has a water bottle. We will have a water station but only for refilling containers (no cups will be available).

Thank you to all of the volunteers who have signed up to help. We couldn’t do it without you!

Hayfield Secondary School Homecoming Football Game and Parade – Friday, October 11th, 7 p.m., Hayfield Secondary School Stadium

One of the Homecoming traditions at Hayfield Secondary School – the top of our pyramid – is to invite students, parents, and staff members from all feeder elementary schools to participate in the Homecoming Parade during half-time of the Homecoming football game. Each elementary school will walk along the track around the field behind its own school banner. It’s loads of fun and a great chance to show off our school spirit to the rest of the community. The game, against Chantilly, begins at 7 p.m. You can pre-order discounted tickets for $5 each on the Lane PTA website. Tickets purchased will be sent home with your child.

School Planning Day/Teacher Work Day – Monday, October 14th

Please remember that students do not report to school next Monday, October 14th. SACC and the office will be open regular hours. Please make sure this schedule change is on your calendar. For more upcoming work days and schedule changes, see the FCPS 2019-2020 school calendar.
The PTA is providing a potluck Taco Bar for a staff lunch that day. Please see the information below to help make the tastiest taco bar ever!

SAVE THE DATE! Veterans Day Salute – Monday, November 11th!

We are honored to have many military families – currently active as well as veterans – in our school community. To honor them and thank them for their sacrifice and service, we have planned a very special celebration for Veterans Day on Monday, November 11th. We invite all active-duty, reserve, and veteran service personnel connected to our school community to come to school that morning to attend a program of patriotic music performed by students and participate in a hallway parade. Watch Wednesday Folders in the coming weeks for more information.

PTA News

Thank you!

The PTA would like to thank all of the families who came out for Beautification Day last Friday afternoon! We had more than 130 adults and children help us clean up and spruce up our grounds. The school looks great, and the turnout was high enough for the PTA to earn the 20 Walt Disney World day passes, which we will use as prizes at Basket Bingo this spring!

We Need Your Help to Serve Lunch to Our Amazing Lane Staff – Monday, October 14th

Our Lane staff will be hard at work on Monday, October 14th, while the kids have the day off. To let them know how much we appreciate all that they do for their students every day, the Lane PTA would like to provide lunch for them - a taco bar - that day, and we need your help!

Please visit our Sign-Up Genius page to view the items needed and choose what you’d like to donate. Items must be dropped off at the Lane office by 11 a.m. on the 14th. Crock-Pots, serving dishes, and other items will be available for pick up after 3 p.m. If you prefer, you can make a donation online through the PTA website, or send a check into school with your child in an envelope labeled “Lane PTA – Teacher Lunch” by Thursday, October 10th. (Please put “teacher lunch” on the check memo line.)

Thanks in advance for supporting the Lane staff!

October Restaurant Days at Silver Diner – Tuesday, October 15th and Wednesday, October 16th

Our October Restaurant Days will be held at Silver Diner next week on Tuesday and Wednesday. Dine out in this classic neighborhood spot and make a donation at the same time. Be sure to show the flyer to your server, and don’t forget to sign the guest book!

Game Night Next Friday, October 18th!

Our next fun-raiser is this Friday’s Family Game Night, which will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lane cafeteria. Just grab your favorite board game and come play with other Lane families.
