Tuesday Tips:

Encourage Nightly Reading

  • Encourage your teen to pick up a book from their favorite author and read it. Or, have a family book club and discuss different books from that same author.
  • Compare characters and story elements..
  • Discuss the author's tone.
  • Make predictions about what will happen next in the story or how it will end.
  • As a family, play charades by acting out certain scenes of the book.

Have fun with it and reinforce that reading can be enjoyed by every age

The state of Virginia has made SCHOOL ATTENDANCE a priority!

  • Regular school attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.
  • Chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement even when the absences are "excused" or understandable.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate from high school on time.

Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with peer conflicts or facing some other potentially serious difficulty, and help is available. Find more attendance data, here.

School Bond Referendum to Be on November 5 Ballot

A school bond referendum will be on the general election ballot Tuesday, November 5. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents of Fairfax County may vote if they are 18 years or older on Election Day and have registered to vote 22 days prior to the election (on or before October 15, at 5 p.m.).

Bond sales, a form of long-term borrowing, are used to finance the building and renovation of schools and must be approved by voters since they are a future obligation for taxpayers. Schools from many areas of the county are included in the list of new construction, capacity enhancement, and renovation projects.

Video: Joining Together at Fort Belvoir to Support Military Families

Principals and support staff from three Mount Vernon Pyramid schools recently participated in the #BeThere Resilience Team Challenge at Fort Belvoir. The teams competed in a physical fitness event that promoted endurance, determination, and the commitment to stand together to prevent suicide. Protecting and defending our nation takes a tremendous toll on military families, including the children of those who serve. Watch the video

Helping your Child Cope with Stress

As parents, we want to shield our children from stress and adversity as much as possible. However, we cannot protect them from everything; everyone will face challenges in his or her life. What we can do is give them the skills necessary to face those stresses and challenges head-on, to learn from them, and to grow in strength and maturity as a result.

Join Dr. Lisa Bateman, Clinical Psychologist, in this important session that will focus on:

  • Recognizing stress in children
  • Building resiliency skills
  • The role of mindfulness and executive functioning skills

Friday, October 25, 2019, 10 a.m.-noon.
