Daniels Run Down-Family Edition, October 11, 2019

Greetings Families,

The weather has finally turned cooler, it is feeling more like fall instead of an extended summer, the Washington Mystics won their first WNBA title and the Washington Nationals are still playing baseball!  Monday is a student holiday however our teachers and staff will be busy.  We will be spending time strengthening relationships among our staff, reviewing our systems of support for students and grade level teams will be planning upcoming units of study.  Our Kindergarten team will be visiting the homes of their students as part of their “Kindergarten Kickoff” between 9-12 on Monday (more information below).  Also, please mark your calendars for October 24th for the Digital Citizenship Night at Lanier MS.  More information can be found at this link: https://danielsrunes.fcps.edu/announcements/digital-citizenship-family-night-lanier-ms

Enjoy the long weekend and Go Nats!

FIELD DAY!!!

Our field day is just a week away and we are excited, this will be our second annual Olympics themed field day. Thank you in advance to all those who have been able to volunteer to help us out. Ms. Piller and Ms. Levine have an exciting day planned for us. Especially in the morning the grass may still be a bit damp so students may want to bring an extra pair of shoes/socks with them.

Field Day Schedule:

Grades 3-6: 10:30-12:30

Grades K-2: 1:30-3:30

Description of Kindness Rocks Project

October is Bully Prevention month and the best way to counter unkind behavior is to encourage our kids to do acts of kindness.  On October 4th, the student in the Daniels Run Mentoring Program painted rocks with affirming messages like, “Be You…never give up” and “Never Alone.”  These rocks will be hidden around the back playground, field and blacktop areas for other students to find.  Once the students receive the message, the note on the back of the rock encourages them to re-hide the rock to spread the kindness around.   We hope these positive messages will reach those students who need to hear them.  So talk to your student(s) about things they can say to others to show kindness this month (and always!).

Hurricane Dorian Relief

Each of the 32 schools in Region 5 of Fairfax County Public Schools are uniting together to support the humanitarian crisis that has occurred in the Bahamas due to Hurricane Dorian. Over the next two weeks, we will be fundraising by using a GoFundMe page. All proceeds will go to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Our funds will go to water, shelter, food, clothes, backpacks, books, and other school materials. Please join Region 5 in making a difference.

Attendance Matters

On Time and On Target!

There are many reasons why students miss school when they don't have to be struggling in the classroom, having conflict with other students or adults, or dealing with challenges at home. When students miss school for any reason, it becomes harder for them to succeed in school. As a team, you will need to identify why your students are absent from school and help them to overcome these challenges. Start here to find resources that can help you set your students up for long-term success by making sure they are in school every day.

Positivity Project

Being Present is one of the five pillars of the Other People Matter mindset. Check out this video from founder Mike Irwin to hear more about it.

Digital Citizenship

How much screen time is OK for my kid(s)?

Kids are spending more time with screen media -- and at younger ages -- than ever before. In an effort to help families curb kids' use, groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have released numerical screen limit guidelines, but the reality is that there really is no magic number that's "just right." What's more important is the quality of kids' media, how it fits into your family's lifestyle, and how you engage your kids with it.
