WTW PTSO WeMail - October 8

PTSO Meeting Tonight!

Our next PTSO meeting is tonight, Tuesday, October 8th at 7 p.m. in the Library.

Unfortunately, when we planned out our meetings for the year, we did not realize that tonight's meeting was falling on the eve of Yom Kippur and for that we are truly sorry.

It is not possible to reschedule without conflicting with other events at Woodson, so if you cannot attend next week please email WPTSOPres@gmail.com if you have any topics or questions you would like to present to the PTSO membership.

Thank you!

Thank you to the parents who responded to the last minute call for volunteers at Saturday's Homecoming Dance.  The Leadership Faculty sponsors truly appreciated your support.

Resources discussed will include SIS ParentVUE, Naviance Student, library resources, and much more.  These resources will assist you in finding everything from your student’s grades to paid internships, free special programs, and scholarships.

This is a fast-paced evening that covers a lot of information. Bring a note pad or smart device to take notes and follow along.

Although we invite all of our freshmen parents to this event, everyone is welcome - especially anyone who has not attended in previous years.

Parents as Partners - Session 2

In response to the Family Engagement Survey administered during the 2018-19 School Year, Woodson is focusing on sharing information with parents to help parents improve their child’s learning and to identify and develop social and emotional skills for students to be successful.  In addition, we are looking for ways to maintain two way communication between families and the school.

One way we are engaging families is through monthly parent seminars.  In addition to the PTSO meetings (held on the second Tuesday of each month), administrators and counselors will plan and deliver a monthly seminar based on various topics.

October’s Parents as Partners seminar will address Wellness and will take place on Wednesday, October 23rd at 5:30 p.m. in Cafeteria A.

Based on the 2018 Fairfax County Youth Survey, there are many assets which assist in positive student well- being.  The parent seminar will feature Dr. DiSalvo, Assistant Principal, Dr. Floyd, Principal, Ms. Parker, counselor and a panel of students to review strategies to help your child balance the demands of high school.   More information will be posted on our website with materials posted after the session for those that are not able to attend.

We will begin our session by exploring this recent article that was in The Washington Post on September 26th written by Jennifer Breheny Wallace.

Fall Sports Highlights

This week the Varsity field hockey team travelled to the Fairfax Rebels for what is always an exciting and hotly contested match.  From the first whistle, the Lady Cavs put the opposition on their back foot.  Emmy Rummel entertained the visitor side with a solo stick skill schooling of two Rebels that left them flat-footed.  At halftime the score remained 0-0.  In the second half, the defense was called into action as long balls began to make their way into the Woodson half.  The stalemate was broken when the Lady Cavs took advantage of a corner.  Gwyneth Durosko inserted to Senior Izzy Gonzales.  A turn and pass to Allie Maahs.  Quick pass to Audrey Fisher for the shot and Woodson was ahead.  Senior Margaret Stephan got the crowd to the edge of their seats on several occasions with long-run attacks into the Rebel half.  Final score, 1-0.  Cavs win.

Wow, last week was a great one for Woodson Volleyball! The Lady Cavs started the week by beating Fairfax last Tuesday. Middle Yanna Willett kept Fairfax on their toes with strong hitting.  Setters Hannah DeGregory and Aubree Reasor worked the court leading to kills by middle Sarah Leaming and pin hitter Becca Rainey earning the Cavs a 3-0 win. On Thursday night, our ladies faced South County, who beat us in September. SoCo has power hitters but they were no match for our defense led by libero Jaden Reasor. With setting from Nicole Gibson and Erin McPhilomy back strong after being down with injuries, out hitters powered back. Middle Maja Zuber scored many points with her signature slide hits.  Our entire offense was on point, taking two sets and then coming back from a seven point deficit to take the third set, winning the game 3-0! Come out next week for two home games: James Madison, Mon, Oct 7 at 7:15 and then WTW Volleyball DIG PINK ON THURSDAY, October 10. Freshman: 4:30, JV: 5:45, Varsity: 7:15. Pink out, bring your family and friends, come out and support this good cause and our Lady Cavs as they face Lake Braddock.
