Dear Waynewood Owls,
What a week it was! Thank you to all of those who participated in Walk to School Day. As always, we had a great turnout and there were lots of smiles as students walked together. A special thank you to the Fairfax County Police Department for sending an officer to support our event.
Next week we will have our PTA Fall Book Fair in the library. It is an Artic theme this year, which will hopefully get rid of this week’s unseasonably hot weather once and for all! The book fair will be open until 7:00pm on Monday and Wednesday. On Monday evening if your child wears a scarf in support of the Artic theme, he or she will be treated to an ice-cream sandwich!
You can support the 6th grade’s fundraising efforts by pre-ordering a delicious Chick-fil-A sandwich and picking it up between 5:15-6:30 pm on Wednesday. Order some sandwiches, buy some great new reads, and head out to the courtyard for a picnic. Desserts and other items will be for sale in the courtyard area as well! Order your sandwiches soon….the preorder will end on Monday, October 7 at 8:00 pm, and no extra sandwiches will be available for purchase. You can find more information about pre-ordering sandwiches here: https://waynewoodelem.ch2v.com/content.asp?PageID=20
Interims will be sent home to all students next week in Wednesday folders. Interims are an opportunity for parents to get a quick piece of feedback from the teacher as to your child’s progress so far this year. More detailed progress reports will be sent home at the conclusion of the first quarter in November.
Have a lovely weekend!
Sincerely,
Katie Cachine, Principal
Alice Berenbaum, Assistant Principal

They will also have the opportunity to ask 6th grade Student Ambassadors any questions they may have about Waynewood!
*This is a student-only event.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Our community really embraced the Backpack Food Drive - Polar Bears vs. Puffins. The final tally won't be out until later today (Friday), but Polar Bears are in the lead and we've collected more than 1,500 servings of food for children in our community that are food insecure. The 6th Grade Community Service Team did an amazing job promoting the food drive inside the school with presenters on the news, posters and their enthusiasm. Much gratitude to everyone who made contributions.
There has been lots of watering to keep our new trees, shrubs and plantings green and with no help from Mother Nature. We're excited about a bevy of swallowtail caterpillars that are munching away as they approach their next stage of life - we'll keep you posted on their progress.
Kudos to the 5th grade teachers and students who planted 400 gallon-sized plants courtesy of the Fairfax County Storm Water Management Planning Division. A team of ecologists taught the students how to plant and why they were planting in the storm water management pond at the back corner of the school. The R3 program (Revitalize, Restore, Replant) was a tremendous success as students worked together to properly install a beautiful collection of plants - iris - bee balm - swamp milkweed and coneflower. We're excited to see the color emerge next spring and to be trained on how to care for the area and understand its purpose.
Like our Facebook page and see who’s who in the garden courtyard! There is an amazing video of a Monarch going into its chrysalis stage!

Prize day is Friday, October 4, 2019! As promised, we will have a surprise “celebration” in the afternoon with Mrs. Cachine since we reached our initial goal! Part of the surprise is the entire school earned extra recess to be distributed in the coming weeks along with new playground balls, jump ropes and games for indoor and outdoor use. Listed below are those seven classes with the highest percentage of student class participation and the class with the highest per student money raised. Lastly, individual prizes will be distributed in the students’ classes on Friday (today).
Classes with the highest percentage of student class participation receiving an ice cream sundae party and extra recess:
K - Higgins - 92%
1 - Fischer - 88%
2 - Jay - 82%
3 - Holt - 100%
4 - Grabowski - 80%
5 - Adams - 100 %
6 - Nowak - 80%
Congrats to Ms. T. Sullivan’s 3rd grade class, the class with the highest per student monies raised, who will receive a lunchtime pizza party, popsicles and extra recess. They had an average of $131 per student!
Highest Laps Run: This year, to tally laps, each student was handed a rubber band as they passed the start line, due to the size of the bands and some other circumstances the Jog-A-Thon Committee did not feel that accurate lap counts were received from all students. Due to this, a male and female K-2nd grader and male and female 3rd-6th grader, who ran, will be chosen to receive the prize of specialist for ½ a day.
