GBE Happenings 10.4.19

Author Visits

GBE had the pleasure of hosting not one, but two author visits this past week. On Friday, September 27th students in grades K, 3rd, & 4th listened to bestselling author/illustrator Kathryn Otoshi speak about kindness, community, and standing up for one another.  On Wednesday, October 2nd students in 1st & 2nd grade enjoyed an author visit from the bestselling & award winning siblings Jennifer & Matthew Holm.  The Holms shared their experience collaborating on books with their sibling, and even had a drawing session with students.  Both visits were truly magical! A special thanks to Barnes and Noble for sponsoring the Holm author visit. Funds from our local school book fair paid for Kathryn Otoshi.

Reflections

Reflections

PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades may participate and explore the arts based on the 2019-2020 theme "LOOK WITHIN". Students may choose one or more of the available arts categories: Dance, Film Production, Literature, Music, Composition, Photography, Visual Arts. Awards are made at the school, county, district, state and national levels. This contest is open to all students. Entry forms, rules, and additional information about the program are posted outside of the Reading Room.  The Greenbriar East deadline is October 15th.  Hand in your original Art with a completed Student Entry Form to the Reading Teacher, Julie Matyas.  It is very important that your form can be read clearly, especially your e-mail contact. Submissions will be rejected if they do not include a completed and signed Student Entry Form or the entry does not comply with the national submission rules.

Your artist statement is very important and is limited to 100 words. Please tell about your work and what it means to you.

  • How does your work relate to the theme?
  • What is your personal connection to the theme?
  • What did you use to create your work (e.g. supplies, technology, instrumentation, props, etc.)?
  • What/Who was your inspiration?

ALL STUDENTS WHO ENTER THE CONTEST WILL BE INVITED TO AN ICE CREAM PARTY IN MARCH TO CELEBRATE THEIR PARTICIPATION.

For additional questions contact: Julie Matyas at jematyas@fcps.edu

Book Sale- Chantilly Regional Library

It’s book sale time!  Please come to the fall used book sale at the Chantilly Regional Library, 4000 Stringfellow Road, Chantilly, from October 25-27.    It’s a great opportunity for students and teachers to purchase books at bargain prices.

To help teachers stock their classroom libraries, we will hold a special Teachers Night on Wednesday, October 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. before the sale opens to the public.  Only children’s fiction and nonfiction and young adult fiction will be available, and materials will be sold at our regular book sale prices.  Teachers will need to show their school ID.

Proceeds from the book sales fund special programs – including the summer reading program and 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten – renovations, landscaping, and new equipment and furnishings for the Chantilly Regional Library.  Many of the library’s free programs – such as story times, book clubs, ESL tutoring, visiting authors, etc. – for students and adults would not be possible without the funds raised through the Friends of the Chantilly Regional Library’s used book sales.

We look forward to seeing Chantilly school families at the sale!  For more information or reasonable accessible accommodations, please call 703-502-3883.
