WP Counseling Intern

  • Have you seen a new person in Student Services over the last month? We’d like to formally introduce Ms. Debora Yoon, our school counseling intern.  Ms. Yoon is finishing her Master in School Counseling at Johns Hopkins University this December.  She is in the office supporting our team five days a week!  Ms. Yoon earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Seoul National University in Seoul, South Korea.   Welcome Ms. Yoon!

Looking back on September

  • 9th Grade Advisory Check-Ins
    • Counselors visited all 9th grade advisory classes in September to introduce themselves and share about resources available to West Potomac students.  Counselors reviewed with students important people in the building, classroom and technology reminders, and reasons to access their school counselors.
  • 12th Grade Senior Meetings
    • Counselors met with their respective 12th grade students to review their progress towards graduation and any remaining graduation requirements to meet.  Students and counselors completed graduation agreements which will be mailed home to parents by mid-October.

  • 9th Grade SOS
    • In order to proactively address the issue of teen depression, on October 22 and 24 all 9th graders will receive information about adolescent depression and suicide and learn what do if they have concerns about themselves or a friend.  Students absent from their session will be invited to a make up session on October 30.  The Signs of Suicide (SOS) prevention program has been used by many FCPS schools and is proven successful at increasing the number of students seeking help. All 9th graders will view a video and will then be given the Brief Screening for Adolescent Depression (BSAD). Any students who indicate symptoms of suicidality or evidence of elevated depression scores will be seen immediately by a member of the mental health team and parents will be contacted. More information, including opt out information, was send to all 9th grade parents today.
  • College Application Reminders
    • Seniors!  Counselors enjoyed meeting with you last month to go over your graduation requirements and discuss your post-HS plans.  Please keep in mind the upcoming college application deadlines:
    • WP Transcript Request Deadline – October 11 (for the November 1 college application deadline)
    • WP Transcript Request Deadline – October 25 (for the November 15 college application deadline)
      • Keep in mind that you can apply Early Decision to only ONE school.  Why?  Because Early Decision is binding (if you get accepted, great, but you MUST attend that school).  If you are not ready to commit to one school, consider Early Action (not binding).
