Orange and White Spirit Day
Friday, October 11 is our orange and white spirit day. Our sister school, Hayfield Secondary will have their homecoming game that evening. To show our support and to help cheer them on, wear your orange and white to school.
Hayfield Secondary Homecoming
Join Hayfield Secondary School in celebrating Homecoming on Friday, October 11. The football team will be playing Chantilly at 7 p.m. Tickets at the gate are $6.00 for adults and $5.00 for students. We are selling pre-sale tickets at $5.00 for everyone here at the elementary school. Look for the form attached with this newsletter.
Traditionally all the elementary schools that feed into the Secondary School are invited to participate in the halftime homecoming parade on Friday evening. Our school has always been a very enthusiastic part of the festivities and will be joining the parade this year. Ruth Drickey will be organizing the students about ten minutes prior to halftime at the scoreboard end of the field and we will march around the track as part of the homecoming parade. All students are invited to join us for the parade.
How can you help at home?
School can be exhausting for our children… following expectations all day long and being challenged with new learning experiences. Your home routines can play a big part in setting our students up for success! Staying true to routines fosters children’s ability to recharge, rest, and be ready for the daily rigors of school. What do your evening routines look like?
- Do you eat dinner at the same time?
- Is bedtime consistent?
- Do you have an “electronics use policy” in the home?
- Do you have a designated reading time with your child?
Creating a plan of action and consistently following a family routine can be a great support to your student and foster their success at school!
Temporary Transportation Change-
What is Needed
Parents/guardians MUST complete and send the Zippy Transportation Pass when children are visiting another classmate’s home immediately after school. This pass is needed from both sets of parents or legal guardians to verify the requested change. Arrangements are to be made at home that indicate the details of the arrangement to include transportation methods. If a visit requires a student to get off the bus at a different stop or to ride a different bus, permission will be given through the office. Bus drivers will not take children on the bus without permission from the school. A child will be sent home using his or her usual manner of transportation unless this pass is sent to school from the parent or guardian. Parents are highly encouraged to schedule playdate and sleepover exchanges of children outside of school hours. Please be mindful that during the busy school day, we do not have the human resources to support verifying the volume of requests that are made on a day to day basis.
Daycare or SACC: If your student usually rides a daycare bus or goes to SACC and leaves early or changes their transportation, parents should contact the daycare or SACC to inform them of the change in dismissal.
Advanced Academic Programs Announcements
If you are new to Fairfax County Public Schools with a current third-sixth student and would like your child screened for full-time Level IV advanced academic services, parent referrals are due to Maggie Gawen by October 10, 2019 by 3:30 p.m. Please direct any questions you may have to magawen@fcps.edu by October 7, 2019.
A parent Level IV referral workshop will be held on November 21, 6-7 p.m., at Hayfield Elementary. This workshop will be held for parents interested in completing a Level IV referral packet. This referral ensures that students in grades 2-6 are screened for full-time Level IV advanced academic placement for the 2020-2021 school year.
Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) Elementary Continuum of Services
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) offers a continuum of advanced academic services for all students in Grades K-8. Learning experiences are designed to develop higher-level thinking through enrichment, acceleration, and extension of the Program of Studies (POS). Teachers, administrators, and Advanced Academic Resource Teachers (AARTs) work together to provide the following levels of services. Critical and Creative Thinking Lessons, Grades K-6 (Level I)
- Because Level I services are for all FCPS students, there is not a screening process.
- Level I services are provided to all students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 and consist of lessons designed to teach critical and creative thinking skills. Strategies are modeled in all classrooms by AARTs and are used throughout the year by classroom and other teachers. Student responses to these lessons are used as part of the identification process for Levels II-IV. Parents may also practice these strategies during family conversations and activities. Differentiated Lessons in Areas of Academic Strength, Grades K-6 (Level II)
- Level II services are available for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6 for students with strength in a specific subject area. The AART collaborates with classroom teachers to provide additional challenges using materials from the AAP curriculum framework for Levels II-IV to extend and enrich in the subject area strength. Screening for this level of service is ongoing throughout the school year.

Part-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-6 (Level III)
- Level III services are available for students in Grades 3-6 who are eligible for part-time direct services from the AART. Students are identified by a screening committee at the local school. The AART uses materials from the AAP curriculum framework for Levels II-IV in the four core subject areas through either a weekly pull-out class or weekly co-teaching model with the classroom teacher. Screening for this level of service is ongoing throughout the school year.

Full-Time Advanced Academic Programs, Grades 3-8 (Level IV)
- Fall screening is held for students who are new to FCPS and have been referred
- Spring screening is held for any FCPS-enrolled student who has been referred
- Screening for Level IV services occurs during specific screening cycles:
- Level IV services are available for students found eligible through a central selection process. The program is available in Grades 3-8. Eligible students use curriculum from the AAP Curriculum Framework for Levels II-IV in the four academic subject areas on a full-time basis.
Due to the volume of files screened centrally for Level IV services, deadlines are strictly held.
- A referral form may be turned in from the first day of school until the published deadline.
- The referral deadline is October 10, 2019 for students who are new to FCPS and January 9, 2020 for students who are not new to FCPS this school year.

School Store
Did you know that Hayfield Elementary School SCA sponsors a school store? Your student can purchase most school supplies that may need replenished through the year from the school store such as, but not limited to, pencils, erasers, colored pencils, crayons, markers, pens, rulers, composition books and spiral notebooks. The store will be open every Monday through Friday from 8:25-8:35 a.m. throughout the school year beginning on October 7. Please be sure to think of us if or when supplies are needed. Thank you!
Parent Liaison
Parent Liaisons are school staff members who are dedicated to helping parents in all their interactions with the school. Our Parent Liaison is Florence Newsome, and she can assist you with a wide array of concerns and interests, helping you and your family get the support and assistance you may need from both the school system and Fairfax County. Ms. Newsome works at Hayfield on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-11:30 a.m. If you'd like to meet with her, send her an e-mail at FNewsome@fcps.edu to schedule an appointment or call 703-924-4553.
Parent Communication
Hayfield sends most of its parent communications home in electronic form, using e-mail, SIS ParentVUE & 24/7 Learning Blackboard, and the school website. Please be sure that we have your current e-mail address on file. To update it, log into the 24-7 Learning Blackboard and update the information through WeCare@School.
Please make sure all phone numbers are current as well. These numbers are critically important in case we have to reach you during the school day.
We send e-mail communications using two platforms –News You Choose (fcps@public.govdelivery.com) and e-Notify (e-Notify@fcps.edu). Please make sure these two addresses will clear your spam filter.
Thursday Folders
Each Thursday, the school sends home Thursday Folders. This folder contains graded student work, teacher notes, school announcements, PTA fliers, and other valuable information. It is important to check your child’s folder each week, sign it, and return it to school for use the following week.
School House Newsletter
On the first Thursday of each month, we email via News You Choose all parents a newsletter, known as HES School House News. Please be sure to read this publication as it contains important notes and reminders about what's going on at school.

24-7 Learning (Blackboard Learn)
24-7 Learning provides parents access to available courses the student is enrolled in, weCare@school to view and update Emergency Care information, and links to view lunch menus, bus stop information and SIS ParentVue. You access 24-7 Learning by using your SIS ParentVUE login credentials. If you do not have a SIS ParentVUE account, please email the office at HayfieldESOffice@fcps.edu.
Communication with Teachers
All of our teachers develop their own classroom communication plans, which may include notes, newsletters, e-mails, or contact through room parents.
If you have a question for your child’s teacher or a concern about your child, the best way to reach a teacher is via e-mail. A complete list of staff e-mail addresses can be found on our school website. Teachers usually respond within 24 to 48 hours, although they may also ask to schedule time to talk about the concern at length, in person or on the phone.
Teachers are not able to take phone calls from parents during the school day. If you call the school to speak to your child’s teacher, you will be transferred to the teacher’s voice mail.
