Positivity Project: Open-Mindedness
You like to consider new ideas and try new things. You examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions.
Open-mindedness is the willingness to actively search for evidence that goes against one’s favored beliefs, plans, or goals. Open-minded individuals are able to weigh all evidence fairly, when it is available. They see the other side and fight the tendency to have a bias for their own views. And, rather than favoring the socially dominant views, they give attention to those that are less dominant.
This character strength helps individuals build knowledge about specific issues or points of view – and provide sound recommendations and advice. Open-minded people do not jump to conclusions. Instead, they seek out and examine all of the available evidence before forming an opinion.

Fall Picture Day
Fall Picture Day is Friday, October 4th. These pictures will be used for the school yearbook. Pictures can be ordered in advance at mylifetouch.com using the Picture Day ID: HJ239028Q0
Fall picture make ups will be held on December 5th for any students absent on picture day or in need of retakes.
Student Headphones Reminder

If your child's headphones have been lost or broken, please send in a new pair of inexpensive headphones as soon as possible. Some class activities and online tests require working headphones.

Parent Orchestra
If your student is learning violin, viola, or cello at Weyanoke, you have the opportunity to learn with them. Take one class every other week at Lake Braddock Secondary School and perform in a concert in the springtime. Contact Mrs. Dizon, eddizon@fcps.edu, for more information and to sign up.
Field Day
Weyanoke’s Field Day will be held on Friday, October 18, 2019. For everyone involved, the primary goal of Field Day is to HAVE FUN. Our students’ focus for Field Day should be on sportsmanship, participation, cooperation and doing their best within the rules of each activity.
Here are a few important things to remember to help your child have a safe, fun-filled Field Day:
- Please encourage students to dress appropriately for the Field Day activities.
- Shorts, T-shirts, tennis shoes, hats, and sunscreen (weather permitting) are all recommended.
- Each classroom will be asked to wear a specific color shirt designated by their teacher.
- Students should bring their own WATER BOTTLE that is labeled with their name and their teacher’s name.
- Each classroom will be having a picnic lunch outside or in the classroom. A bag lunch from the cafeteria will be provided or students are permitted to bring your own bagged lunch to enjoy.
Volunteers Needed
We need parent volunteers to work at the event stations and to help with lunch and clean-up on this fun day. If you can volunteer, please return the volunteer form to your child’s classroom teacher as soon as possible.

A Message from the Student Services Team
Welcome back to another school year from your Student Services Team at Weyanoke!
This year we welcome to Weyanoke two new team members: Jenny Alvarez is our new social worker and Jennifer Melz is our new part-time school counselor. We look forward to offering support to the students, staff, families, and community. The school counselors provide guidance lessons to all students focusing on skills for academic success, career exploration, and personal/social development. The school social worker connects families to resources in the community. The school psychologist collaborates with parents and teachers to help students who are struggling in school. All members of the Student Services Team provide crisis counseling and individual or group short term counseling with parent permission. Any student can request to meet with us or can be referred by a teacher, administrator, or parent.
Please feel free to contact us at any time during the school year if you would like to discuss your child’s needs, share concerns, or be connected to resources.
