Vaping Advice for Parents

Many of you have seen the recent news stories about "vaping" or "Juuling" which is the social term for e-cigarette use. You may think that this is a "new" problem, but it’s not. School systems around the country have been fighting this issue for the last 3 years. What’s the REAL issue?? The real issue is once again, our children are ahead of us with technology. As the technology has progressed, these devices have become smaller and easier to hide. The "Juul" and it’s "pods" are known as the "I-phone of e-cigarettes".

So…what can you as parents do?? A lot more than you think. Here are a few pointers…

1. Educate Yourself - There are plenty of resources online now for vaping education & prevention. One of the best is kidshealth.org because it covers resources for parents kids, teens and educators.

2. Model Good Behavior – Do you smoke or vape? Our kids know what we do. My mother was a life-long "bathroom" smoker and thought we didn’t know. We did…the whole time.

3. Devices – No need to go searching BUT…know what a "Juul stick" looks like or what a "Juulpod" looks like so you will recognize one when you see it. You would think they are USB drives for your computer but are not!

4. Talk With Your Kids – One of the best "openers" for this conversation is to ask your kids to help YOU learn because you have seen so much on the news. Even if they are not involved, they probably know more than you think and are happy to share. You can take it from there.

5. Set Boundaries – After "talking with them", set the boundaries. Let them know this NOT OK with you and is illegal for anyone under age 21 and is also against the FCPS Students Right & Responsibilities. One of the most effective tools in parenting is communicating the "family rules" and what is not acceptable behavior in your family.

One of the most powerful tools for any parent is to communicate with their children about the "temptation" they will have to be "cool" and "accepted" by their friends. Vaping and "Juuling" is the new "smoking" for this generation and is starting to cause ripple-effects throughout our society.

As a "team" of parents, educators and students, we can make a difference!!

Have a great start to your school year!!
