Principal's Message

We have had two wonderful weeks filled with celebration, learning, and smiles! As a school system FCPS focuses on Portrait of a Graduate (POG) skills.  At CES, we have been and continue to concentrate on the specific POG skill of Collaboration. Below are a few collaboration skills we emphasize during the school day.

  • I respectfully listen to other points of view.
  • I share my ideas with my team.
  • I encourage others to help the team.
  • I both give and use feedback to help improve work.
  • When problems arise, I help find solutions.

We believe that collaboration is a foundational skill for all learners. One way you can support your child's progress with this skill is to have specific conversations about collaboration with them. Consider telling your child when they are demonstrating the skill at home or in a social setting. For example, when you were playing with your sister, you were being kind to her by sharing your toys and letting her choose a game to play. Share examples of how you were a collaborator during your day or within your job. Provide specific details and explain how using these skills helped you. (e.g., I was a collaborator at work today when I _____. This was helpful because ___________.) Instead of asking “What did you do in school today?”, consider asking one of the questions below:

  • How were you a collaborator today?
  • How did you help your team finish the [activity, project, assignment]?
  • Were there moments when your team struggled? How did you handle that?
  • Did you have a chance to see things from a different side? What did you learn when you did that?

Recently, we explored the character traits of OPEN-MINDEDNESS through P2.

WHAT DOES OPEN-MINDEDNESS MEAN?

  • Open-mindedness is the willingness to actively search for evidence that goes against one’s favored beliefs, plans, or goals. Open-minded individuals are able to weigh all evidence fairly, when it is available. They see the other side and fight the tendency to have a bias for their own views. And, rather than favoring the socially dominant views, they give attention to those that are less dominant.
  • This character strength helps individuals build knowledge about specific issues or points of view – and provide sound recommendations and advice. Open-minded people do not jump to conclusions. Instead, they seek out and examine all of the available evidence before forming an opinion.
