Tech Talk
Prodigy
Prodigy is a free, Pokemon-style learning platform for math, for students in grades 1-8, that has recently been approved in FCPS as a Responsive Instruction tool to support all students.
In Prodigy, children create and customize their very own wizard avatar as they progress through a number of curriculum-aligned math skills.
Prodigy can be found on the FHES Learning Links page. Please understand that placement within the program may not directly correlate to the Virginia Standards of Learning for your child's grade level.
Ask your child if they are familiar with Prodigy. Many of our teachers allow access during Math Workshop or after all assigned math tasks are completed. It adapts in difficulty according to your child's learning needs and is very engaging!

Portrait of a Flint Hill Graduate Night
We are busily preparing for our upcoming Portrait of a Flint Hill Graduate Nights on October 16th (grades K-2), and October 17th (grades 3-6), where we will be providing you with information regarding what your child will be learning this year, as well as highlighting how they will be learning!
What you can expect:
- You will remain in your child's homeroom class.
- Teachers will rotate; each teacher will be sharing one content area (Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies). There will be ten minutes afforded to each subject, with time provided for teachers to transition in between.
- You will learn about various learning experiences that your child will participate in this year. These learning experiences include, but are not limited to, our use of advanced academic resources applicable to your child's grade level, Project Based Learning, and technology integration. You will leave with an understanding of Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop, Math Workshop, and how your child's teacher is differentiating to meet all students' needs in a diverse classroom setting.
- You will have an understanding of prerequisite assessment, used in mathematics, to ensure your child is learning at an appropriate level of intellectual demand--and to ensure we are closing gaps in mastery.
- You will receive a link, via email, that includes a hyperdoc that will connect you to the "Year at a Glance" documents which delineate the content that will be covered this year. There is an online "parking lot" (QR code) for you to park any questions you may have. We want to maximize our time together; therefore, there is no time allotted to ask questions. We will review any questions that are submitted, and send our responses directly to each grade level's parents by the end of the following week. We will only address global questions. Questions about your child should be discussed during your parent-teacher conference.
- You will definitely leave excited about the year ahead!
We sincerely look forward to showcasing our version of a "Curriculum Night." We thank you, in advance, for your presence and support as we try this new way of sharing our enthusiasm about teaching and learning with you! Please be mindful that the evening begins at 6 pm. With parking at a premium, we encourage you to carpool with a neighbor or friend, if possible. See you soon!
We can't wait for Portrait of a Flint Hill Graduate Night!
There are goal-directed and resilient students in all classrooms, but check out some of our second graders in Ms. Shaffer's class below!
