Hayfield AP Students and VA STAR Students Explore Problem-Solving with Engineering Tomorrow

vastar1

For students, it’s a chance to explore, learn and find new passions in problem solving and engineering. For Hayfield Secondary AP students and VA STAR students from Mrs. Riley’s and Mrs. Chiplock’s classrooms it was an opportunity to take a look at engineering problems, labs, and tours which will range over 4 visits from bridge building and catapults to phototherapy, water desalination, robotics, solar energy and a spectrum of varying engineering lab choices. Mrs. Riley shared regarding this field experience visit,

“I particularly like the hands on aspect of the visit that was centered around solving a problem and the opportunity for the students to talk to engineers in an informal setting.

As an educator, it was good for me to take a step back and watch the way my students problem solved and worked together in a low stress environment.”

Engineering Tomorrow, was founded In 2014 by Bill Woodburn, a Partner at Global Infrastructure Partners, with two main objectives:

(1) to encourage inner city high school students to pursue engineering in college by getting them excited and energized about careers in the field of engineering; and (2) to bolster the number of U.S. students entering the field of engineering in order to continue our country’s leadership in innovation and problem solving at the highest levels.

Taking the helm as Executive Director of Engineering Tomorrow is Dr. Timothy McNiff.

The program became established in NY/NJ and has expanded to the Washington, D.C./DMV.  Hayfield Secondary School students marked the inaugural lab event for Engineering Tomorrow at the Blue Plains Water Treatment Plant.

A Special Surprise at Hayfield

On Friday, September 13, 2019, Major Cooper and his brother - Tyrick Muhammad - surprised his 9th grade son, Jacob, at Hayfield Secondary.

During his sixteen-year career in the US Airforce, Major Cooper has been deployed three times. This last deployment was for over seven months in Afghanistan. Due to the time-difference and working twelve to fourteen-hour days in Security Operations, Major Cooper had very little time for video chats with his family during this last deployment. Plus poor cell-phone service made an already difficult situation even tougher!

So - Major Cooper came up with a surprise plan! He enlisted the assistance of Jacob's counselor, Ms. Rodriguez-Lee, who told Jacob that she wanted to talk to him about his classes....however they needed to stop by the main office first to pick up something!

That’s where Jacob was surprised by his father and uncle as well as many school staff members who were there to capture the wonderful reunion.

We were all in tears when we saw the big bear hug Jacob gave his father!
