AP Test Opt Out Information

AP Opt Out Form Distribution

  • Beginning yesterday, September 27, and continuing over the next ten days, AP Opt Out forms will be distributed by Ms. Watt, West Potomac AP Test Coordinator, to all Wolverines enrolled in an AP Class.  Ms. Watt is visiting each advisory class and handing these directly to students.
  • If your child chooses to opt out of any of their AP exams for May 2020 testing, they must return the form to Kevin McMahon in Student Services no later than October 25, 2019.
  • Each form has additional information about this process on the back.  The information on the back of each students form is also listed below.
  • If you have any questions, please contact Rebecca Watt at rwatt@fpcs.edu

Information included on the back of each AP Testing Opt Out Form

As part of the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) FY 2018 Approved Budget, FCPS adopted new fees for high school students enrolled in Advanced Placement (AP)/International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. These fees remain in effect for the 2019-2020 school year. Complete information can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/activityandtestfees

AP  Test Fees

  • The fees for the first six AP tests taken by each student for courses in which they are also enrolled for high school credit or are auditing will be paid by FCPS. The number of AP tests is cumulative over a student’s academic career in FCPS and this year’s count will include all previously funded exams. AP tests taken outside of FCPS are not included in the cumulative count.
  • Students who choose to take one or more AP tests beyond the six FCPS-funded tests will be charged a fee of $94 per AP test.
  • Students taking one or more AP tests without enrolling in the corresponding course will be responsible for the test fee(s) and these test(s) will not count towards their six FCPS-funded tests.
  • Opt-outs after October 25, 2019 and course drops after November 4, 2019, and/or exam day no-shows:
    • Will be charged $40 each for the FCPS-funded tests.
    • Will be charged $94 each if beyond the six FCPS-funded tests.

Fee Payment

  • AP test fees will be billed in December 2019.
  • Parents/guardians can pay fees online using a debit or credit card or electronic check through MySchoolBucks (http://www.myschoolbucks.com).
  • Students who qualify for the free and reduced-price meals program and have submitted the consent to share their free and reduced-price status will not be charged for these fees.
  • Students and families who are undergoing economic hardships and are financially unable to pay the student fees may be eligible for assistance per Regulation 2135, Assistance to Students, and must contact Principal Tangy Millard by November 9, 2019.

Opting Out

While FCPS encourages all students to take AP/IB tests for courses in which they are enrolled, students will have the opportunity to opt out of the test(s) using the form on the reverse side of this letter and according to the process below.

  • By Friday, October 4, 2019, students will be provided with the opt-out form and a report of their current and cumulative AP/IB test history to assist in the decision-making process.
  • Completed opt-out forms must be returned to Kevin McMahon in Student Services NO LATER THAN 3:00pm on FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25, 2019. Classroom teachers cannot collect the forms.
  • Students who do not return a signed opt-out form by October 25, 2019 will be registered for all AP/IB tests associated with current courses and will be charged fees as outlined above.
