Author Jon Agee's visit to Washington Mill
This past week, students in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade were treated to the super talented author-illustrator Jon Agee. Thank you Mrs. Dugan for arranging this opportunity for our students.
Positivity Project: Open-Mindedness
Each week, students of Washington Mill are introduced to a new character trait on the WMES Morning News Show from the Positivity Project. Administrators give a brief explanation of the character trait to the school community, and each classroom is assigned a character trait to present to the school community. In the past students have created videos, read books, talked about their personal experiences with the character trait, and illustrated pictures.
For the week of September 30 - October 4, we will be focusing on
Open-Mindedness.
You like to consider new ideas and try new things. You examine things from all sides and don’t jump to conclusions.
Open-mindedness is the willingness to actively search for evidence that goes against one’s favored beliefs, plans, or goals. Open-minded individuals are able to weigh all evidence fairly, when it is available. They see the other side and fight the tendency to have a bias for their own views. And, rather than favoring the socially dominant views, they give attention to those that are less dominant.
This character strength helps individuals build knowledge about specific issues or points of view – and provide sound recommendations and advice. Open-minded people do not jump to conclusions. Instead, they seek out and examine all of the available evidence before forming an opinion.
