Principal's Message - 9/28/19

Stone MS

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,

We had another great week at Stone! It’s hard to believe we have completed five weeks of school. Thank you for your support this year. Be sure to ask your child about P2, the Positivity Project. We will focus on the 24 P2 character strengths throughout the year and continue our work to cultivate a positive culture around the idea that “other people matter”. This week’s character strength lesson was on Curiosity.

WHAT DOES CURIOSITY MEAN? You like exploration and discovery. You ask lots of questions because you want to learn more about anything and everything. Click to read more about Curiosity!

FCPS CARES: Do you know a Stone Middle School staff member who went beyond what is expected this first month of school? If so, then click FCPS Cares to submit a brief description so we can all acknowledge the good work of Stone faculty and staff members. Thanks for your continued support.

Amielia Mitchell

REGION 5 MAKING A DIFFERENCE

Each of the 32 schools in Region 5 of Fairfax County Public Schools are uniting together to support the humanitarian crisis that has occurred in the Bahamas due to Hurricane Dorian. We have all witnessed the devastation from this deadly storm and we want to be able to help. There is an estimated 18,000 children in crisis and many children have lost everything they own. So, we are calling each of our communities to action!

Over the next two weeks, we will be fundraising by using a GoFundMe page. The link is below which also includes a link to a video for more information. All proceeds will go to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Our funds will go to water, shelter, food, clothes, backpacks, books, and other school materials.

Please join Region 5 in making a difference. Any amount can be helpful! The fundraiser will end Friday, October 4th. Please click this link to go to our GoFundMe page. Thank you for supporting this cause!

REFRIGERATORS WANTED

If you or someone you know is remodeling and has a working refrigerator that they would like to Stone MS, please contact the main office at 703-631-5500. The refrigerators in both teachers’ lounges are not working and we are looking for refrigerators to store staff food.

DO YOU HAVE A GREEN THUMB?

We are looking for one or two parents to help guide students in the cleanup and maintenance of Stone’s Flower beds. In-depth knowledge of gardening is not necessary, but a willingness to commit a few times a year to garden cleanup would be fantastic.

Please email Stephanie Newby, slnewby@fcps.edu if you are interested.

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Stone After School program is designed to provide students with opportunities to participate in structured activities such as homework, sports and recreation, leadership, and various other enriching activities. The first quarter activities list is posted on the Stone MS website. Students are welcome to participate in the activities Monday - Friday. The After School program runs Monday - Friday from 2:15 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. There is no charge to participate in the After School Program. Late bus service is provided Tuesday through Thursday after the program for those students who are regular bus riders. The after school registration form must be completed and returned to the school before your student can stay after. Please note that it is necessary to have an active FCPS 24-7 Learning Parent View. The Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account will give you 24 hour access to your child's attendance, class performance, demographic data, and more. The same login credentials will be used to access both the SIS and FCPS 24-7 systems.

FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH APPLICATION

The Free and Reduced Meals application is now online. Families must re-apply every year to receive this service. More information and a link to the application can be found at: https://www.fcps.edu/resources/student-safety-and-wellness/food-and-nutrition-programs/free-and-reduced-price-meals.

Please also complete the consent to share information (section 4 of the application) as this can allow the school to waive course fees and receive reduced fees for other activities. If families do not re-apply their number will be inactivated in early October.

EARLY DISMISSAL PROCEDURE

Prior to leaving school early, a student must bring a note signed by a parent or guardian to the front office at the beginning of the school day stating the reason for leaving and the planned time of departure. The student will be given a pink early dismissal/check-out form by the office staff. This will be his/her pass to depart from class at the indicated time. Parents must come in to the office with a picture ID to sign out their child. A record of each student's check-outs will be kept by the office.
