Fall Sports Highlights

The Varsity field hockey team travelled to Mount Vernon and South County.  Kiera O’Connor opened the scoring.  Gwyneth Durosko inserted the ball, Senior Anna Stribling put the ball on target, and Zoe Hite deflected into the goal for #2.  Senior Anabel Heisley assisted for Audrey Fisher for #3.  It was Allie Maahs to Stribling to Katie Williams for the fourth goal.  Kira got her second and brace by halftime.  In the second half, Woodson moved the ball all over the field.  Stribling found the sixth and game-ending goal.  Cavs win, 6-0.

Against the Stallions, Senior Izzy Gonzales put Woodson ahead soon after the first whistle.  It was end to end play with some rough and tumble in the mix.  The Lady Cavs were up for the challenge.  Maahs created an opportunity for Heisley to grab a goal.  Senior Margaret Stephan fired a hard pass to assist Durosko that put Woodson ahead 3-0 at halftime.  Stribling to Stephan led to the fourth.  Great ball movement connected Stephan to Gonzales and back to Stephan for goal #5 and Stephan’s hat trick.  Cavs win, 5-0.

Co-Ed Golf

On Tuesday, September 24th, the Cavs competed in the Patriot District Tournament at Twin Lakes Oaks Course.  While the Cavs came up just short of qualifying for the Occoquan Region Tournament as a team, senior captain Amelia Noca earned a coveted individual qualifying spot.  The Occoquan Regional Tournament will be held on Thursday, October 3rd at Laurel Hill Golf Course.  Congratulations to the Cavs on the great progress they made as a team this season, they are a young team full of promise for the future.  Best of luck to Amelia as she competes for a chance to play in the VHSL Boys State Tournament!

Girls volleyball played last Tuesday against West Springfield at home. Olivia Guerra and Amy Burkhardt hit hard on the front line and led the team to a 3-0 win. They travelled to Robinson on Thursday. With a strong start they took the first set, but Robinson rose up and took the next three. In spite of great defense by Jaden Reasor and hard hitting and blocking by Ruthie Ridderhoff the Cavs could not prevent the loss. The ladies are ready to fight back for wins this week with both games at home at 7:15pm on Tuesday, October 1st against Fairfax and Thursday, October 3rd against South County. Our Cavs are hungry to beat South County at home after falling short last time at their court. Come out to Woodson, be loud and give the girls the home court advantage for some wins!

Hurricane Dorian Relief

Dear Region 5 Communities,

Each of the 32 schools in Region 5 of Fairfax County Public Schools are uniting together to support the humanitarian crisis that has occurred in the Bahamas due to Hurricane Dorian. We have all witnessed the devastation from this deadly storm and we want to be able to help. There is an estimated 18,000 children in crisis and many children have lost everything they own. So we are calling each of our communities to action!

Over the next two weeks, we will be fundraising by using a GoFundMe page. The link is below which also includes a link to a video for more information. All proceeds will go to the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Our funds will go to water, shelter, food, clothes, backpacks, books, and other school materials.

Please join Region 5 in making a difference. Any amount can be helpful! The fundraiser will run from Wednesday, September 18th to Friday, October 4th.
