Positivity Project: Teamwork
You work well as a member of a group or team. You are loyal and sacrifice your individual desires for the greater good.
Teamwork is the ability and willingness to place overall group success as a higher priority than individual achievement. Citizenship is a willingness to work towards the common good as opposed to one’s own self-interest. Those with strengths in teamwork and citizenship often work to help all group members find success. These individuals are willing to commit time and resources to further group goals and help move toward the greater good.
This strength is associated with naturally positive feelings that accompany being a member of a family, team, school, political party, ethnic group, or country. However, those positive feelings can come at a cost with negative behavior towards the “out-group” in the form of blind obedience, disparaging words, or prejudice. This is important to guard against by leveraging a person’s other positive character strengths.

Advanced Academics Parent Meeting
A parent information meeting will be held at Weyanoke Elementary on Tuesday, October 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. The Advanced Academics Resource Teacher will provide information about levels of service and examples at Weyanoke, as well as explain and answer questions about the screening processes for part-time school-based and full-time Level IV services.
Ability Testing
In the fall, the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT) is administered to all FCPS first grade students and the CogAT- Custom Form is administered to all FCPS second grade students. During the fall testing cycle, the NNAT and/or Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) may be administered to students in Grades 3-6 who do not have an ability test score.
Parents or guardians may exercise a one-time retest option during the fall testing cycle. Please contact the school testing coordinator Michelle Doyle, mldoyle@fcps.edu no later than September 25, 2019 to request a one-time retest for either the NNAT or CogAT.
Please do not wait for test scores before submitting a referral for your student in Grades 2-7 as there will be no referrals for Level IV screening accepted past the January 9, 2020 deadline. If you are waiting for test scores and would like your student screened for Level IV, please submit the referral by the published deadline (even if you have not received the test scores for your student).
Parent Orchestra
If your student is learning violin, viola, or cello at Weyanoke, you have the opportunity to learn with them. Take one class every other week at Lake Braddock Secondary School and perform in a concert in the springtime. Contact Mrs. Dizon, eddizon@fcps.edu, for more information and to sign up.
Field Day
Weyanoke’s Field Day will be held on Friday, October 18, 2019. For everyone involved, the primary goal of Field Day is to HAVE FUN. Our students’ focus for Field Day should be on sportsmanship, participation, cooperation and doing their best within the rules of each activity.
Here are a few important things to remember to help your child have a safe, fun-filled Field Day:
- Please encourage students to dress appropriately for the Field Day activities.
- Shorts, T-shirts, tennis shoes, hats, and sunscreen (weather permitting) are all recommended.
- Each classroom will be asked to wear a specific color shirt designated by their teacher.
- Students should bring their own WATER BOTTLE that is labeled with their name and their teacher’s name.
- Each classroom will be having a picnic lunch outside or in the classroom. A bag lunch from the cafeteria will be provided or students are permitted to bring your own bagged lunch to enjoy.
Volunteers Needed
We need parent volunteers to work at the event stations and to help with lunch and clean-up on this fun day. If you can volunteer, please return the volunteer form to your child’s classroom teacher as soon as possible.

A Message from the Student Services Team
Welcome back to another school year from your Student Services Team at Weyanoke!
This year we welcome to Weyanoke two new team members: Jenny Alvarez is our new social worker and Jennifer Melz is our new part-time school counselor. We look forward to offering support to the students, staff, families, and community. The school counselors provide guidance lessons to all students focusing on skills for academic success, career exploration, and personal/social development. The school social worker connects families to resources in the community. The school psychologist collaborates with parents and teachers to help students who are struggling in school. All members of the Student Services Team provide crisis counseling and individual or group short term counseling with parent permission. Any student can request to meet with us or can be referred by a teacher, administrator, or parent.
Please feel free to contact us at any time during the school year if you would like to discuss your child’s needs, share concerns, or be connected to resources.
We look forward to a wonderful school year!

Title I Parent & Family Engagement Policy & Compact
Weyanoke Elementary is a Title I school within Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) and utilizes the Title I grant to improve student achievement and help all students meet the objectives of the FCPS Program of Studies and the Virginia Standards of Learning. A partnership with families is essential to meeting this goal.
Under Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, schools that receive Title I funds are expected to collaborate with families to develop and maintain a parent and family engagement policy that describes the school’s approach to involve families in students’ learning and includes a compact expressing the partnerships among staff, caregivers, and students to reach high academic goals for every student.
Weyanoke Elementary jointly developed this policy and compact with members of the school community and adopted it for the 2019 - 2020 school year. A number of the provisions specifically address state or federal expectations for the policy and compact.
This policy and compact is distributed to all caregivers in a language that families can understand. Caregivers have opportunities to provide comments and feedback on the policy and compact through comment boxes housed in the front office and family center and during the Title I Annual Meeting. Comments are submitted with the school’s policy and compact to FCPS central offices and the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). This policy and compact are made available to the broader school community through the school website.
